Comment:

Born Bertrand Russell Bernstein, the fact that he used various parts of that name and other aliases besides helps to disguise quite how many Sixties classics he wrote - but whenever you see the writing credits "Berns/Ragavoy" or "Russell/Meade" that's one of our man's compositions! Personally, I think if "Piece Of My Heart" was the only song he ever wrote he should be hailed as one of the greatest song-writers ever, but as it is the body of work he left behind before his premature death speaks for itself. For me, it's only when you put all of his best songs side by side that you really get a feel for what a genius he was. In addition to his writing credits he was also the producer behind some of the most enduring Sixties singles including Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl", The Drifters' "Under The Boardwalk" and Barbara Lewis' sublime "Baby, I'm Yours". What a man!

The trouble with doing a mix like this is that you find extra tracks you had either forgotten about or weren't aware of on some vert random compilations. A Northern Soul compilation reminded me that Tammi Lynn's wonderful "I'm Gonna Run Away From You" was another of Mr Berns' classics and whilst browsing on the internet I discovered that he also co-wrote "I Want Candy" by The Strangeloves - and I couldn't possible leave off either of those tracks! Consequently I had to drop a couple of obscure Ben E King/Drifters album tracks. I 'think' this is now the final mix!
