Comment:

With a few mixes of songs by my all-time favourite group floating around elsewhere on this site I thought that, rather than posting another similar mix, I'd post this CD I put together of 'original' versions of songs covered by Kevin Rowland and Dexys Midnight Runners. It is quite an odd mixture of influences and probably helps to explain why Dexys music encompassed such diverse styles. I also now realise how big an influence these songs have had on my own musical taste - there are several cross-overs with the (apparently unrelated) mixes I've previously posted. A few points of clarification: 1) Quite a few of these songs were only covered as part of live perfomances which have never been released but, trust me, they exist! 2) "I'll Say Forever My Love" and "I Gotta Hold On To My Love" were not so much 'covered' by Dexys as incorporated into other songs. 3) Although the Drifters recorded the 'original' of "One Way Love", Cliff Bennett's version was the inspiration for Dexys' cover, which is why I chose that recording. 4) Several of these selections were covered by Kevin Rowland for his much-maligned solo album "My Beauty" - including "Thunder Road" which had to be left off the released album after Bruce Springsteen's lawyers refused to give permission for a few lyrical changes! 5) "Concrete And Clay" was not only covered by Kevin Rowland but was also the inspiration for the 'bom-ba-bom' rhythm in "Come On Eileen"!
