Comment:

This is a slight reworking of a CD I put together for my Dad a couple of years ago. He's always been fascinated by the lyrical references in the Mamas & Papas' song "Creeque Alley" and this was an attempt to satisfy his curiousity by mixing together all the artists mentioned in that song. Hence we have The "Mugwumps", "McGuinn" (with The Byrds), "McGuire", "The Spoonful" alongside the songs of "John", "Michie", "Denny" and (last but by no means least) "Mama Cass". I tried to mix the 'obvious' material with more obscure tracks in an attempt to satisfy his desire to hear the songs he already knew whilst trying to open his ears to other songs he SHOULD know! In some cases I simply chose tracks that I happen to love, in others I was influenced by the aptness of certain songs to the lyrical references in Creeque Alley. For instance The Lovin' Spoonful's "Night Owl Blues" merits inclusion mainly because the same venue is name-checked in "Creeque Alley". Similarly, the implied reference to "McGuinn getting higher" in the title "Eight Miles High" meant that I had to include that track. Track 7 in particular had to be featured as it combined several of the song's references in one go: Barry MacGuire, backed by The Mamas & The Papas, singing a song by The Loving Spoonful!

It was a fairly simple idea but it seemed to work quite well and thankfully my Dad appreciated it!

Wow... I... that is a really cool idea. You win ten thousand scene points for putting this thing together. Don't spend them all in one place!

Excellent research & thoughtful mix composition and some really good tunes. Please let me know if there's anything I could trade you for this.

Thanks for your comments, glad you like the comps. I agree with your Hawaii comment. This mix is great although i must admit to having never heard of the Mugwumps. I'm gonna try and download a few tracks by them now. I'm sure i won't be dissapointed!
