Comment:

The second part of the mix I posted earlier today. Because of the years featured (1960-62) all of these songs represent a far more typical "Girl Group Sound" than the previous disc but there's still a clear sense of the sound developing even in the space of these three years.
Starting with the shortest song title I know (if anybody knows a shorter one, please let me know!) and concluding conveniently with one of THE archetypal Girl Group songs, "He's So Fine", recorded in the final weeks of 1962, there are several milestones along the way - almost like pieces of a familiar jigsaw falling into place: The arrival of the great song-writing teams like King & Goffin; The first classic "Wall of Sound" production - "Oh, Yeah Maybe Baby"; The debut of The Ronettes as 'Ronnie & The Relatives'; The breakthrough of Motown in the shape of The Marvelettes. As I typed out this list, it dawned on me that in places this is almost like a sampler for some of the other mixes I've submitted recently... there are songs by Greenwich, Barry, Mann, Weill and Bert Berns... no less than four songs covered by The Beatles... and even the obligatory Chiffons track! ...This is now an extended version - since I turned Part One of this mix into a 30 track collection, it seemed only fair to do the same to Part Two. Consequently I've added Martha & The Vandellas' debut release and a great King & Goffin composition: "Stranger In My Arms" by The Cookies.

Fantastic sequel, hitting the tunes I'm a bit more familiar with. And let's not forget "He's so fine", covered by George Harrison :-) I love the innocence, with underlying melancholy, of this music. Sad songs are never so sad as when sung by girl groups. And happy songs are never so happy. Nice to see the Donays here.
