Comment:

90 minutes long. Part of a 3 tape set (more will come later when I buy the rest of his new cds, nods). This has taken hours to compile.

One of the greatest musical talents of all time, and arguably the biggest musical force of the 70s. Like it or not. This album covers his hungry, searching beginnings through the mega-hit albums Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane. This comp includes all his huge album hits, singles, and lesser known album tracks.

Run down of tracks.

SPACE ODDITY - Bowie's first hit.
THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD - Best track from same album. Other good tracks but no really huge standouts (maybe Width of a Circle and All the Madmen, but not good enough for a short comp album).
CHANGES - Huge hit from Hunky Dory.
OH! YOU PRETTY THINGS - Lesser hit from Hunky Dory, so catchy with great lyrics.
LIFE ON MARS? - The other huge hit from Hunky Dory. In the end, Changes is probably bigger, through its simplicity. Genius in simplicity.
ANDY WARHOL - Track I have always loved from Hunky Dory. Bowie's newly released Bowie Collection (compiled by him) includes this song.
QUEEN BITCH - Another stand out Hunky Dory track recently featured in the movie Life Aquatic. Rocking rocking tune.
FIVE YEARS - SOUL LOVE - MOONAGE DAYDREAM - The opening 3 tracks from Ziggy Stardust. Probably one of the best openings to an album ever. Soul Love was also released recently on the Bowie Collection.
STARMAN - Another minor hit from Ziggy Stardust. I wish this song had wider acclaim, classic glam Bowie.
ZIGGY STARDUST - The song Bowie is probably best known for. And with good cause.
SUFFRAGETTE CITY - Another huge hit from Ziggy Stardust.
ROCK 'N' ROLL SUICIDE - The logical conclusion of Ziggy Stardust. Heartbreaking and hopeful. Bowie in a nutshell.
JOHN, I'M ONLY DANCING - A pretty big single. This is the regular non-sax version.
ALL THE YOUNG DUDES - David's contribution to Mott the Hopple. But only David can perform it the way it was meant to be sung.
ALADDIN SANE - Title track from the 1973 album. The tracks off of ALaddin are the last time the Spiders from Mars played together. The great piano here serves as a momentary breather from all the lyrical action. Also, this is a great song.
DRIVE-IN SATURDAY - A thoughtful reflection of times passed. Bowie sings Jagger's name here. What a song.
PANIC IN DETROIT - Road trip to Detroit? Play this in, loud!
CRACKED ACTOR - A documentary on Bowie was named this. Another rocking track, overlooked. This was also on the Bowie Collection.
THE PRETTIEST STAR - Beauty.
THE JEAN GENIE - The most well known track off of Aladdin Sane. Bowie at his bluesiest.
SORROW - Wonderful cover from Pin-Ups. The opening violin to this song is marvelous.

That is album 1. This is a quite complete and decent look at early Bowie.

Stay tuned for 1974-1979.

wow, this looks superb! congratulations, it really seems like you've thought about all this a lot, and i'm glad people are willing to take the time to put stuff like this together. i have "The Collection", and it's great -- better than "Best of Bowie" in my opinion, but i didn't know it was put together by the man himself! "Soul Love", "Starman" and the two Zissou tracks are my particular favorites in this mix. can't wait to see your Best of Modern Bowie!
