Comment:
90 minutes long. An all out all-vocal attack on the classic 1958 movie, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman! Volume 4 in my lounge/exotica series paying tribute to the so-bad-they're-good B-films of the 50s. Anyone that hasn't seen this classic flick should be ashamed of themselves, go out and get it. If you witnessed the horrible (unfunny) 1993 TV remake with Daryl Hannah (thougn I love her, BLADE RUNNER!) please don't let that put you off, the original is so much better (worse) with a 50 foot truckload of unintentional laughs. The best laugh comes from the only prop created for Nancy Archer after she becomes a giant. A giant hand, with black corse hair patches all over it, in faraway shots her hands obviously have no hair on them, too much! Oh poor Nancy Archer, you know the old story. Woman in the California desert falls in love with a sweet talking guy who only loves her money (Nancy is loaded). Guy gets a mistress, Nancy loses it and an alien turns her 50 feet tall so she can run amok! Great great fun, in the league of Plan 9 from Outer Space when it comes to being able to make fun of a movie. Do yourself a favor and see it. As for the music used here, nothing but solid lounge performances spanning the mid 50s to the late 60s. Sammy Davis turns in Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone, amazing, love the opening vocal effects for this song. Louis Prima and Keely Smith turn in 2 incredible duets, That Old Black Magic and I Ain't Got Nobody, the latter being one of the best duets I have ever heard. Peggy Lee with the sultry Fever, and very album appropriate Big Spender, big fun. The haunting Angel Eyes from Jack Jones with an amazing organ solo in the middle by the master Bobby Hammack. Dean Martin gives us a vocal kick in the head with Ain't That a Kick in the Head, Just In Time, and the satiny Volare. Wayne Newton warbles over Stargners in the Night, and of course the classic Danke Schoen and Shangri-La. Check out the 50 foot 5 track Bobby Darin breakdown on side 2. Great fun, especially Hello, Dolly!, as it makes many refrences to growing! (As do about 8 other tracks). Check out this link for a picture of the ridiculous "hand". You know I wouldn't want to have to listen to too much of these artists, but love your concept.
Well, sign me up. Love the kitsch factor.
yeah, the fascination of the good bad stuff is never-ending, & it's hard to put into words why e.g. the orginal is so bad it's good whereas the remake is just plain bad; but, by George I think you've got it!
