Comment:

It was the unlikliest of circumstances that got me into Eastern European folk music: Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel. He went to Bulgaria and released an album of field recordings while at some festival there. The recording was magnificient. The nasally vocals, the odd time signatures, the non-western scales, and the unique percussive/string instrumentation create this mysterious and beautiful music. I became completely enamoured with this little 30 minute recording Jeff Mangum made. I bought it at the time only because I was a big fan of Neutral Milk Hotel, but now my exuberance for the folk richness of eastern countries like Bulgaria and Romania has practically usurped my love for Neutral Milk Hotel!

Lovely. Of course I don't know most of the artists, but I too fell in love with the energy of the eastern european folk music (although mainly gypsy music in my case) when I used to do a lot of work in Brno, Prague, Bratislava, Sofia, Kiev and Moscow. I'm going to listen to this straight away. Thanks for the link.

Yet another reason to get home. This looks of the highest order...though I speak not of familiarity of the music represented, here, but rather the obvious passion you've presented this music.

Would far rather listen to Bulgarian folk music than sodding French attempts at the ilk; Thanks for the link mon ami.

I enjoyed the "little taster" you presented us, and it's left me wanting more. I agree with the Gnome, your new found passion for this genre is quite apparent.

This looks incredibly good - am trying to get hold of it right now (damn you, slow internet!) and get better acquainted with the genre. Very original too.

What? I thought the main folk song of Romania was "Dragostea Din Tei." (-: Numa numa, yeah.

Nice work Salman.

Thanks for providing a link to this refreshing excursion. MOTW material.
