Comment:

And you thought your family was bad. Mamma was an opium smoker and it goes downhill from there until it bottoms out with the Lord of Dysfunction, Tom Waits. I've got a large and let us say, varied, family but don't go thinking that they are the blueprint for this mix. Don't go thinking that just because there are no Brother songs that someone is being protected. Dedicated to my favorite brother, Hemizen, and the rest of the crew.

Strange...Don't recall seeing you at the family reunions...Then again, most of them were held in police stations and ER's.

I see Susie and oh there's Nannie....I think this is great. I have a Lyle Lovette track on a soon to be completed mix. BTW I saw mom and dad and Cindy on Sunday.

Great stuff, the 2-6 and 11-14 stretches are killer as are 9 and 16. No overlap with my variation on the theme http://www.artofthemix.org/FindAMix/getcontents.asp?strMixID=102127

Family values! That's what I like to see.

Yet another one that might go good in here would be Robt Earl Keen's Merry Xmas from the Family - ("I can't remember how I'm kin to them") . . .

Top notch mix and a great theme - you obviously had a lot of fun with it!! The Tom Waits picks are fantastic and love the Michelle Shocked too.

one of the reasons i like doing theme mixes is it forces me to really listen to songs that i may overlook otherwise. tom waits is my favorite (if you haven't figure it out from my mixes) but black market baby had never stuck out before. after using it for this mix i have to wonder what was wrong with me.

I do love a black sheep, or in this case a flock. Looks sharp and nice execution.

Oh really, you like Tom Waits?! I would have never guessed.

But, seriously, I do agree that theme mixes are great because they inspire to really pay attention to songs that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. And this is a particularly well-executed example of one.

Excellent! This is my simplistic reduction but I think what makes Tom Waits so uniquely great is that, while all other white singers yearn to be Black, Tom Waits always wanted to be Puerto Rican. I felt that hearing him sing 'Somewhere' from West Side Story: It almost never fails to tear me up.
