Comment:
I recently saw Over The Rhine twice in one day and not only was thrilled with the show but was overjoyed to realize that they must love Tom Waits as much as I do. No less than three songs from their latest album contained Tom references. One stole bits of lyrics, one namedropped and one was a tribute. This is a mix of covers, namedrops, and tributes.Tim Buckley did the first ever Tom Waits cover. Billy's Band, Claudia Bettinaglio, and, most recently, Scarlett Johansson, have done complete albums of Tom Waits covers. The East of Sunset soundtrack is entirely Tom Waits covers with [The Caseworker] performing the majority. It is well worth tracking down.
Is it June 29th yet?
Feedback:
your reverent tom mixes are never less than breath-taking, really - this looks exceptionally cool, although i thought i was the only one who actually kinda liked the scarjo album...
Gee you did a Tom mix. How surprising is that! ;-)
A great way to break in the new computer!!
Interesting. Interesting to see how many artists (and Scarlett Johansson) have covered Waits. Nicely researched, wonderfully executed. Would like to hear this.
Hey, breaking in the new PC further would be to upload this mix, nudge nudge...
it's pretty darn mind-boggling that you were able to do this... i mean, isn't it??
... i'm glad you were able to figure out a good way to use a song from anywhere i lay my head on a mix. i *think* "i wish i were in new orleans"-accompanied-only-by-music-box-and-sympathetically-vibrating-guitar-a-la-some-frankensteined-traditional-indian-instrument is my favorite track on it, but i'm not even sure, the album is so friggin' weird. you know, even the clerk at the music store i was buying it from expressed doubts about that album, which has got to break some sort of hippocratic oath of retail. on the other hand, i already felt half-vindicated when he, um, had never heard of this Tom fellow....

So, you couldn't resist the new Scarlett J. covers CD any longer! Would enjoy reading your take on her handling of the mighty Tom's tunes . . .
Great inspired mix. Hopefully more mixes like this are created on your new computer!
I am humbled in my Waitaholism. Rainbow Sleeves is heartbreakingly beautiful and I, for one, dig the Scarlett disc (although in a mildly unnerved way)
I've seen Over The Rhine on several occasions and never been disappointed. They are even better live than on record, in my opinion. Not surprising to hear of them referencing Waits.
I remember seeing Waits in the William Friedkin movie "Sorceror" and thought he should spend more time acting. Nice mix for a fine songwriter.

Beautiful. And I completely agree with the eminent Mr. Doowad.
This is one of those mixes I can hear in my head just by looking at the tracklisting - and it sounds great. Was surprised to not see any of Holy Cole's fabulous Waits covers.
Slack-a-gogo: I am glad you are with me on Holly Cole cover versions. There are some amongst us that disagree. Since I have used I Don't Wanna Grow Up, I Want You, Little Boy Blue, and Temptation on previous Waits mixes and am promising another Cole cover on my next Waits mix I don't feel bad about not including her here.
