Comment:
50 States Vol. 2In the words of Jesus, "It is finished." It's taken me almost two months and cost most of what sanity I had left, but here is the finished product of my 50 States musical project. There are a few of these mixes on AOTM and elsewhere, but I limited myself to some strict rules with this project that made it tougher (and I think better). I tried to stay away from completely obvious choices, and also keep it relatively uptempo. The rules: 1- No instrumentals (Arkansas Traveler). 2- No using the state as an adjective (Oregon Girl). 3- No using a city from the state (Kansas City). 4- The state must be in the title. 5- Nothing slow as molasses. The easiest states: Louisiana, Texas, Georgia The hardest: Washington(!), Kansas, New York, Iowa In the end, I think this is one of the better mix cds I've compiled because the limited number of songs for each state meant that I had no choice in modifying the arrangement or mood or tone or even the order. This creates a wild sort of randomness that is only held together by the fact that there is an overall theme. I mean, where else would you find Wilf Carter, The Dead Milkmen and The Gipsy Kings on the same mix? Nowhere, that's where. Go make your own, Ben Fortenberry

Feedback:
Love the concept. Are you missing South Carolina? Also, I love how lots of songs are about going back to a certain state, except for New Jersey, which is NEVER going back to New Jersey.
Ben, Your compulsiveness has paid off. Nice work. Time to start on the next project.
(I am a little puzzled how New York could be one of the difficult ones. Aren't there hundreds of songs about it?)

South Carolina is the songs "Just a Little Bit South of North Carolina" It was borderline on my title rules but the song is a great little tune about South Carolina. New York was tough because it couldn't be about the city. The are MILLIONS of songs about the city, but I had to find one that was general enough to at least be ambiguous to keep it within my (facistly) self-imposed rules.
Awesome freakin' mix - but I'd have chosen Alice and Hazel doing "West Virginia, My Home" instead! Great job man.
Wow, who'da thought there were song titles with every one of the states in them? These mixes will be quite useful as trivia, thank you. Oh, and what I know of the music is pretty top drawer, too. I could only hope to be this thorough with my own theme mixes, congrats
