Comment:

I received an email from one of my favorite AofMers, Abangaku, reminding me that I have not posted a mix for quite some time. I have a backlog of mixes almost complete and couldn't figure out why none of them have been posted. I've finally figured it out. I have a mix that is a response to one of Abanguku's mixes. The selection and sequencing have been finished for months, the problem is the liner notes. No matter how hard I work on them they don't match the standard set by Abanguku on his original Sophie mix. I've struggled for months but now I surrender.

This mix is a companion piece to abanguku's excellent mix, ballantine. His liner notes did everything that I want mine to do, inform, entertain, and make me want to run out and buy the music. Of course I rarely run out, it is much easier to click away. If you want to read really good mix notes, please check out Ballantine's Day: Abanguku's BEST of SOPHIE B. HAWKINS and then spend a day checking out the rest of his mixes. I promise you it will be a day well spent.

TONGUES AND TAILS - Easily the most accessible album in Sophie's body of work. Witness every song is included on either Abanguku's or my mix. Interestingly it is not considered the favorite of either of us.

WHALER - The voracious omnisexual dials up the rhythmic sophistication and dials down the sex on her second album.

TIMBRE - Ironically my favorite Sophie B album contains her only song I do not like. MMM My Best Friend is a tribute to her dog that I am sure her producer tried to convince her to leave off. Oops, Sophie produced this one which explains how it made the cut. Producing your own record can be like editing your own book, it lacks a bit of perspective.

WILDERNESS - I didn't own this until Abanguku made my get it. I am still growing into it but it clearly has some treasures.

BAD KITTY BOARD MIX - Showcases Sophie's jazzy side. Like most live albums the chatter, which is interesting the first time, becomes distracting. Someday I will master editing software and solve this problem.

i'm actually wondering the same thing about this as i am about that new tom waits mix you've got posted: is it possible to make this mix just by slapping the tracks together? because obviously i'd clearly like to hear it. i think you've got a real different approach to Sophie than i do, though i'm not sure if i can tell just by reading this list... your favorite Sophie B. Hawkins album is actually my least favorite, for example (and, considering she has only 5 albums, i guess that doesn't mean all that much, but still). but it reminds me of when i tried to recreate Beautiful Maladies for myself. first of all i couldn't find Night On Earth anywhere, so i replaced Good Old World (which i've since acquired) with Barcarolle from Alice, which seemed to be actually a nice fit. but the more important thing is that although Tom Waits had a completely different perception of the "best of" his music than i did (a lot more dependent on percussion, for one), it completely hung together and then i suddenly had two completely different pictures of Waits's Island period. speaking of TW, i sort of feel regret now that i *didn't* make my Orphans mix as a companion to yours, which after all was really my inspiration for it. but the fact that you constructed your SBH mix as a complement to mine is anyway some kind of ridiculous praise, as far as i can humbly tell, so i can only say a ridiculous thank you, i guess. you know -- there was a while when Tongues and Tails was my favorite album of hers. i'd say you could (should?) have included Mysteries We Understand -- that live version that opens BKBM is really incredibly different from it. i'm so glad you enjoy my liner note style. i must say that the phrase "voracious omnisexual" is apt to set my buttons aflame, too.
