Comment:

Another example of why Tom Waits belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the wide range of artists that have covered his songs. i've tried to pick versions that differ from Tom's. Some are as good as Tom's (both covers of I Don't Wanna Grow UP), some are better ([the] Caseworkers version of Poncho's Lament and both covers of Temptation), some are just interesting (Spring String Quartet's instrumental cover of Downtown Train, Kazic Staszewski's Polish rendition of Clap Hands. Vote For Tom.

I appreciate Tom Waits as a fine storyteller but find his voice a little jarring so a mix like this really appeals to me. I'll have to search my Pale Saints records to see if I've got that cover. Happy holidays.

I was going to vote for Ron Paul but you have convinced me to vote for Tom.

That John Hammond album is one of my favorites. I wouldn't want Tom in the R&R Hall of Fame with Madonna and her ilk. Similar to the Groucho Marx line about not wanting to belong to a club that would have someone like yourself as a member. Great concept here, I was wondering what would be your new twist.

the fact that tom (along with the 'mats) haven't been inducted into the R&R hall of fame yet is blasphemy - though i guess it's somewhat fitting, since as of late it's seemed more like a publicity campaign for reunion tours & nostalgia rather than an actual constructed merit of accomplishment. nevertheless, this looks fantastic - i love all the waits songs, & the ramones/neko case covers especially.

You know Clap Hands was the first Tom Waits track I ever heard... my dance teacher in something like 3rd grade would have us warm up to it! somehow i got the sense that it was (in language i'd only find out later) part of the way, way out-there, oh-so-tantalizingly creepy New York avant-garde (maybe it was?). the fact that there's a Polish version here just brings back all that mystery. i'd love to hear that, as well as Tom's duet with Bruce and a cover of Temptation that really makes the case for it as the *great* song that plenty of people insist it is. oh, and the conception of this mix is of course stunning.on a side note, have you heard Alison Krauss's cover of "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone? i've heard it played twice so far over PAs in record stores and it's absolutely, stunningly beautiful, and it reclaims right into the fold a TW song i've never really been so hot about. i'm not even so interested in the album ("Raising Sand"), just that one song. Next step for you, Tom: how about covers *by* Waits and their originals?? (i'd still love to hear him cover Richard Thompson's "Waltzing's for Dreamers".)

Oh lord...I wish I owned this mix. It's beautiful and I don't have many Waits covers at all.

hmm... well, you know, i for one would love to hear the originals of "somewhere", "danny says", "heigh-ho", etc. next to Tom's versions, but then again, it's not like there's much precedent or anything for this sort of thing....come to think of it, a straight mix of Original Songs Covered By Tom would also be awesome... i myself don't have nearly a full mix's worth of these to pull it off.

Excellent idea and execution! Definitely one of those "why didn't I think of that" mixes. Looking forward to the upcoming mix of all Tom covers too...

Great concept and wonderful mix for a unique artist. I'm pretty sure I have every album he's released but I don't think I have very many covers of him. Just did a search in my iTunes which of course brought up all those albums but also a few covers not listed in this mix or comments... Johnny Cash, Shawn Colvin, Marianne Faithful, Solomon Burke, The Blue Hawaiians among others. Interesting.

Interesting concept, been planning on doing a Tom cover mix for awhile. Love the Ramones, both Hammond picks, the Neko, Krall, Springsteen and Moxy Fruvous tracks. Could do without Ms Cole personally and thanks for no Rod Stewart.
