Comment:
In my passion for collecting Tom Waits cover songs I purchase a lot of cds that i otherwise would never have considered. Here are the highlights of these discoveries. All of these artists have shown there good taste in covering Tom. Their diversity adds much to Tom's legacy as a songwriter. Marianne Faithfull provides an incredible cover of John Lennon's Working Class Hero. Eleni Mandell, who has five excellent albums full of great tunes, is represented here by Easy on the Way Out. Tom guested on Thelonious Monster's (great band name) Adios Lounge. The Cottars were a pair of teenage brother/sister pairs when they recorded Georgia Lee and Hold On. Cibelle is Brazilian so you get one song in English and one in Portuguese. Dion of The Wanderer fame covered San Diego Serenade and contributes a Waitsian braggadocian tune, King of the NY Streets. Ute Lemper who recorded Purple Avenue, which Tom hasn't, finishes strong with The Case Continues. Wonderful stuff.Feedback:
this is actually a really neat idea, tracing not only tom's influence but a personal history of your own - i'd love to check this out, the opener is especially intriguing me
it's cool how the chain-reacion effect can lead to many great new things. I'm not familiar with a lot of these, but I like Marianne Faithrfull and Everything But the Girl.
Can't wait to hear the Dion track.
Count me intrigued.
This looks great.
See, OCD can be a good thing...I'm not going to tell you the usual suspects ;-) but...Although I haven't heard everything here, I'm looking forward to the Dion, Cibelle and the EBTG. And I am not at all surprised that Marianne was able to do something interesting with that old war horse. I always thought Lennon's (and most other versions) were just a bit boring, hackneyed, but she definitely brings something nice to the table.
Don't know a lot here but really like the Dion, Eleni Mandell & Marianne Faithful picks.
Like the others said, a fantastic idea. I'll bet this is great!
Diverse and interesting set of picks.
I have to take Tom in small doses (not that I don't like him, it's just I can't susstain interest for an entire album at a time) these tunes however look like they'd remedy aforementined interest probs!
I have been led to so many artists through Waits, Marc Ribot, Teddy Edwards, Lew Tabackin, Eleni, Jesca Hoop, Chuck E. Weiss, Tin Hat Trio, Skip Spence. I keep almost buying the Bullet Boys album with "Hang On St. Christopher" on it! This is really great.
Mark, don't buy the Bullet Boys. I'll send you my copy if you want it. It's my least favorite Tom cover ever.
Excellent! Love the Dion song.
My only complaint is that there is no way to download this... stellar, start to finish.
This looks Beautiful, Tom.. I'd also love a DL link.
Bim Skala Bim and Thelonious Monster... Haven't heard those since high school! Great project, I love the intricacies of musical discovery.
Awesome, I bet these are great. Have you tried Tori Amos's version of Time... I'm not a big fan of hers but I like her covers.
Tori's version of Time made a previous mix of Waits covers,Women Love Tom. I wouldn't describe myself as a Tori Amos fan but I own a couple of her early cds and enjoy them.
