Comment:

My first DJ set. I had a chance to DJ a club for about an hour and half on Tuesday and this is what I concocted. The club mostly plays indie, electronic and post-punk music but I was given free reign by my DJ friend who gave me this opportunity. I brought my laptop and a crate of records and just started to mix with the help of my friend.
Here's the rundown on how things went. First, decent crowd on hand of about 50 people. Sort of nervous and intimidated so I start off with two catchy indie tunes. I think the first track is a second rate Pixies rip-off but it's still so catchy and the crowd liked it. I then move to this bouncy Brazilian post-punk track which people were vibing to. After that I wanted to see if they'd respond to some hip-hop so I played a Viktor Vaughn (MF Doom alias) track which went over sort of okay (they couldn't really dance to it). Seeing that I went right back to the clubs bread-and-butter and played a summery electronic track by Four Tet. Things right back on track. Then I wanted to change it up. I bought this LP a while back of this Western Saharan guitar band, which blew me away, and it blew people there away as well. Some girl commented that it sounded like a "Bee Thousand Guided By Voices B-side. I couldn't agree more. Put on some old school jazzy hip-hop, which went over quite well (they could dance this time to it!) and then followed it up with this incredibly cheezy techno/house track. People were digging it though. The next track not so much. The exotic sounds of Yma Sumac didn't sit well with them. A lot of WTF's. Deflated, I went back to some grooves this time provided by the Young Fresh Fellows. I found one of there LP's at my parents house over the holidays and fell in love with it again. Crowd loved it as well and the Os Mutantes track that followed. I tried my hand again at foreign sounds with two of Eastern Europe's most beloved gypsy bands, and it got mixed reviews. There were actually 5 Romanian tourists that night and they went bonkers when they heard Taraf de Handouks. There passion sort of spread to the others. They took me out for desert afterwards curious as to how I knew about Taraf de Handouks. After the gypsy folk, I went back to an old school beat which got the club jumping again and then followed up with some the wild post-punkish sounds of Les Savy Favs and the infectcious pop stylings of Annie and Solex. A great 4 punch combo! I ended on this amazing skull dizzying track by Gui Boratto which had everybody grooving in a trance. This song puts smiles on faces. A really fun night.
For those not in attendance: 75 minutes of bliss.

That's awesome that you got the chance to do that, dude. I would be super-stoked to get a chance to dj for a night. Sounds like a great evening. This looks killer, by the way. Downloading right now...

Salman, this sounds like a great time. glad to hear the Romanians knew what to do with T de H and showed the others. I'm hoping to someday start playing music somewhere in town [sounds promising, right?], so thanks for the heads-up concerning Yma Sumac. no jungle exotica - got it. guess she's probably a tad too interesting for the 'cool' kids. that picture of you at the mixing board is priceless. when's your next set?

I have to pull a Sgt. Schultz here, but it sounds like a blast. It looks like you really have some top-notch equipment, judging from the photo.

You lucky sod! Hee hee I'd love the opportunity to be let loose in a French club but I can only think of one venue that wouldn't run me outta town after an evening listening to my stuff. Much of this is new to me salman but can't wait to hear that closer.

Unfortunately I've done many, many DJ sets over the years, but my set has never been as cool as this. Guess I'm playing the wrong venues. I'd have loved to have heard this playlist while on the town. Oh well, the DL is the next best thing...

Yma Sumac cleared the floor? Bummer.
Love that Gui Borrato track.

Taraf de Handouks? Everybody knows that means "Band of Outlaws," so you are in the groove with mahdishain and doowad tonight! It's a beautiful life.

Looks amazing Salman and sounds like a top night out too. I'm gonna have to find the time to listen to this. I used to dj but never got as much freedom as this- had to stick to soul/rnb/indiepop type stuff but I'll never forget the night I couldn't put a foot wrong and had 100odd people dancing like crazy for two hours...!

Obviously the event, judging by the picture, took years off your life. I'd have danced, or moved in some way, to Yma.

well, put this on at work last Friday morning (then promplty got quite sick and went home - but not your mix's fault) and it was a big hit! co-workers especially liked the Erik B. & Rakim and Holy Ghost! tracks. those were good I agree, but my personal faves were Envelopes (perfect opener, you're right), Four Tet/Group Doueh set, Taraf de Handouks/Fanfare Ciocarlia set (I'll say it again: thank God for the Romanians!), Annie (like Tom-Tom Club w/ a little sip of helium) and that great Gui Boratto closer.
