Comment:

When I was a young man I went to concerts frequently. Aerosmith, REO Speedwagon, J. Geils Band, Bachman Turner Overdrive dominated my high school years. Yes, Kiss was my very first concert.
In my twenties were highlighted by Rickie Lee Jones, Ian Hunter, Johnny Winter and a host of blues singers: BB King, Matt Guitar Murphy, John Lee Hooker and others. Foolishly I grew up, got responsibilities, and stop going. Until recently I had only seen two artists live in the last ten years, David Olney and Richard Thompson. WDVX has been putting on free daily one hour concerts for some time. It took an appearance by Mary Gauthier to get me to go. Now I am addicted and go as often as I can, two or three times a week lately. I am reminded of the power of live music. The quality of the artists is amazing. I keep expecting to go one day and think, that was a waste of time, but it hasn't happened yet. Go to WDVX.com at noon Eastern Time to stream these shows if you are not fortunate enough to live in the Knoxville, Tennesee area. If you are I will see you there.

Happy Anarchy was the first rock and roll band I saw at the Blue Plate. The album, Reset, is tremendous.
The Luminescent Orchestrii show was the best one I've been to. Some of their best songs have not been recorded yet. I can't wait for the next album. You can see two of the songs from the Blue Plate show on youtube.
The drummer from Toughcats stays locked in a cage in the back of their van and is only let out to pound and growl for their shows. Check them out on youtube, especially Helicopter, which unfortunately the did not perform. It is the only performance I could find online that even approaches his energy level live.
Wild Animal Party is two pairs of brothers from a college in Virginia playing Appalachian Grunge. Seek out their Blue Plate vids on youtube, This Town and especially their Kinks Kover, Strangers.
The Bowmans are Twins striving to be ten year old sisters when they grow up.
After seeing Melissa Greener I've been playing Fall From The Sky repeatedly. I have also just picked up Joni Mitchell's first album, Songs To A Seagull. I've got to tell you, I like Melissa's debut better. I am not saying Melissa Greener is better than Joni Mitchell, I am saying check her out.
Tift Merritt is the most renown of the artist on this mix. Another Country has been number one on the Americana charts.
Matt Morelock, host of the Blue Plate Special, felt obligated to let the audience know that Erick Baker is one of the happiest guys in Knoxville after Erick had taken lonliness and heartbreak to suicidal levels during his performance.

Excluding my recent WDVX II mix, Every artist here except Tift Merritt and Luminescent Orchestrii are making their Art of the Mix debut. You heard it here first.

cool concept, the motivation behind it is quite telling of the power of our beloved pop music - the tift merritt really catches me here

If there is any justice in the world Luminescent Orchestrii will be huge soon. When I grow up I want to somehow be as cool as Sxip Shirey, true story.

Great stuff and I hope to catch you at the Blue Plate when things ease up around the farm. One new colt born and a second on the way.

Tom, can you guess who will be doing a bit of research (and downloading) this weekend? 5ive stars for the educational notes alone.

I love the fact that I know nothing here (which is quite normal for me on AOTM by the way), but (and this is the bit I love) the notes will motivate me to go do some research, some downloading and probably some purchasing (hee ! hee!). I can sense a lost weekend coming up ! Thanks.
