Comment:
Every year, my friend David - whom I've known since high school and was the guitarist in my first serious band - has a birthday shindig at this Korean joint back home in The D. Every year, a bunch of us take off our shoes, and sit on the floor around this long, low table in the back room and have ourselves one hell of a time. Each year, many of the usual suspects are present. However - without fail - the roster is never the same. Some miss a year or two, then come roaring back with a vengeance. Others - we'll call them "wild cards," show up one year never to be heard from again.
Regardless of who's in the house, one thing remains constant - "The Joke."
I have this "go-to" joke that I tell any time I need a joke and it kills! Suffice it to say, every year at this soiree, a command performance of "The Joke" is requested and every year I knock it out of the park.
Since I moved to Charlotte nearly two years ago, I have been absent from the last two such gatherings. Sure, through the modern miracle of cell phone technology, everyone back home gets to hear the joke, but it just ain't the same.
I've burned Dave a lot of CDs over the years and he always asks me for more. Never before, however, have I ever made him a mix - until now.
It's been a while since I've crafted a mix and now - with the modern miracle of iTunes, it's even easier for me to do so.
So...this is the fictional soundtrack to the many flavors of shenanigans Dave got into on his 40th birthday - real or imagined.
Why these songs? They represent a lot of songs I've come back to over and over again since I've moved - with a few older ones thrown in to tie it together.
You could call this Smokynoircool II: Electric Boogaloo - as it certainly reflects a lot of that vibe - but do not, under any circumstances, call it a comeback.
Call it a good time spent on a Saturday night and the friends back home who had it.
Feedback:
I see where you're goin' with the Waits and Buddy Guy, along with quite a few other nice hookups (Taj, Bruce, Jimmy Smith). I might be one of the wild cards next time.
Wow!
Great stuff on here. Tom Waits and Patti Smith...Cool...not to mention Morphine and the best B-3 player of all time!I love it!

there's some very cool stuff here, i don't know everything, but i know that this mix is good! nice opener, especially...
That 9-13 stretch is killer and my favorite Morphine track...well done
I've had a mid-life meltdown going on for fifteen years so this music works for me.
