Can't Knock the Hustle: The Best of Jay-Z, CD2
Artist | Song | |
Jay-Z | Takeover | |
from The Blueprint (2001)
Jay-Z | Izzo (H.O.V.A) | |
from The Blueprint (2001)
Jay-Z | Girls, Girls, Girls
from The Blueprint (2001)
Jay-Z | Song Cry | |
from The Blueprint (2001) Included due to its status as a popular favourite in spite of not being released as a single, and its consequent Grammy nomination.
Jay-Z & Eminem | Renegade
from The Blueprint (2001) Included due to its status as a popular favourite in spite of not being released as a single, attested to by its inclusion on the bonus disc of the Eminem compilation, "Curtain Call."
Jay-Z & BeyoncT | '03 Bonnie & Clyde
from The Blueprint¦: The Gift & The Curse (2002)
Jay-Z & Pharrell Williams | Excuse Me Miss
from The Blueprint¦: The Gift & The Curse (2002)
Jay-Z | What More Can I Say
from The Black Album (2003) Included due to its release as a "street single" simultaneous with "Change Clothes", as well as the general critical consensus of its high quality.
Jay-Z | Change Clothes | |
from The Black Album (2003)
Jay-Z | Dirt Off Your Shoulder
from The Black Album (2003)
Jay-Z | 99 Problems | |
from The Black Album (2003) Included because - though it only reached #30 on the Billboard Hot 100 - it is often cited by musicologists as the defining cut of Jay-Z's post-Blueprint career.
Jay-Z | Show Me What You Got
from Kingdom Come (2006)
Jay-Z | Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)...
from American Ganster (2007) Included because - despite the fact "Blue Magic" charted higher on the Billboard Hot 100, beating it by eight places to reach #55 - "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)..." tends to be considered "American Ganster"'s best song, as evidenced by Rolling Stone naming it the best song of 2007 and its inclusion on the DJ Hero Renegade album.
Jay-Z & T.I. & Kanye West & Lil Wayne | Swagga Like Us
from Paper Trail (2009) Included because of its crediting to Jay-Z and T.I. as solo artists, unlike "Crazy In Love", "Umbrella", etc., and the fact it was intended to appear on "The Blueprint 3" prior to it being recalled due to its use of auto-tune.
Jay-Z & Rihanna & Kanye West | Run This Town
from The Blueprint 3 (2009)
Jay-Z & Alicia Keys | Empire State of Mind
from The Blueprint 3 (2009) |
Comment:
Perhaps the most prominent quibble detractors are likely to have with the second part of this compilation is my decision not to include either "Crazy In Love" or "Umbrella" on it, both which were #1 Billboard Hot 100 singles. The reasoning for this, however, is sensical: while "Swagga Like Us", for example, is a decidedly hip-hop song that was intended to appear on the "The Blueprint 3" album, both "Crazy In Love" and "Umbrella" are songs that Jay-Z only plays a limited role in, stylistically and literally (for this reason, neither are technically credited to him, though he is mentioned as a 'featured' artist on both').Feedback:
Again, very good. Props for "Renegade"- that needed to be on here.
