Comment:

I made and gave away so many mix tapes over the years, most often to girls I was dating at the time. Which is to say I'll never see them again (the girls or the tapes). Never did it occur to me to make a copy for myself, or even write down what was on a tape. Too bad, because I recall some kickass mixes. Here's one I made in spring of 1982 on a Scotch Highland C-120, and recently stumbled across. Amazing that it's still intact. All off vinyl, with the snap-crackle-pops to prove it. I know I played it almost constantly that spring and summer. Are there other first mixes out there that anyone would want to share?

Yes, it is a good idea to either keep a copy of a tape (as I usually do) or write down its contents. As far as what my first mix was like - I won't go there - much too scary! As for what kind of tape I would have made in 1982 (when I was in high school), it probably would have contained The Police, The Who, Led Zep, Tom Petty, J. Geils, The Cars (being from Boston, they were a favorite), Pretenders and anything else my boyfriend at the time was introducing me to. It wasn't until college that my tastes started to expand, thankfully.

Wow. The tape content, like the tape itself has kept incredibly well. i wish i knew what my first mix was, but i'm pretty sure it was composed sometime between 1993 to 1995. and i'm fairly sure i know who has it. not worth seeing really.

Ah yes, the great lost mixes concept...I must have 10 or so out there, made for various girlfriends or crushes...they were all kick ass, and never did I make a copy! I do recall that one got thrown out without being listened to, it had gone from being a crush mix to a really perverted sex mix and she didn't take well to it...oh well..

Beautiful mix -- '82 really was a good time for music. Hey, if you're interested in mixes from the past, check out mine -- I have all 36 volumes posted of a mix series I started in early 1990, at the age of 14.
