Comment:
During our travels of this past summer my girl and I were fortunate enough to happen upon a place called Sanford, Maine, a mill town in the state's southern tip, sandwiched between New Hampshire and the briny open sea. In the summer the tourist money evades Sanford and pools in towns to the east, like Kennebunkport, Old Orchard Beach, and further north in Portland. In the winter I don't imagine there can be much of anything to do, with the mill now closed. But for the months of June and July, Sanford is home to the creatively-titled Mainers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. The NECBL is a modest operation supported by both big time college sports and big league baseball, and is designed to allow promising college-level ball players a chance to play during the summer months. Every summer, college boys from such worldly locales as Boston and Princeton, NJ arrive in passed-over towns like Sanford and Thread City, CT and North Adams, MA where they board with local families and hone their skills on real grass. And once the summer has passed and the season is over the college boys leave again, taking with them the still-throbbing hearts of the towns' girls and some of their boys. We arrived in Sanford in the middle of an afternoon downpour, but one look at the brick and iron facade of tiny Goodall Park and we knew we had to take a chance. We bought tickets and retired to the wood-paneled comfort of a room at the Oakwood Motel. As game time approached the clouds thinned, the sun cracked through and the birds sang. Streaks of orange and gold light slanted through the chainlink fences as the Mainers and the Quarry Dogs of Concord, NH took the field, a little late but welcome nonetheless. It was a perfect evening. This tape is intended as a small albeit heartfelt tip of the hat to: anyone who has ever paid their five dollars to climb the metal stairs and take their seat in the grandstand at Goodall Park; to Andy Sonnanstine, who struck out 10 Quarry Dogs en route to a 6-0 victory that night; and to all the heartbroken daughters of Sanford.Feedback:
Nice story and a great mix (including my favorite Modern Lovers tune)!
nice story & mix
You're back! Hello to you and, by extension, CC ("my girl". aww). "Out In The Street" - so good.
I liked the story too, and you brought some great music to back it up. Zombies, dB's, Mountain Goats and a terribly overlooked 'Mats pick. Excellent.
