Comment:

I'm not much of a fan of Radiohead but Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks are opening - who I really dig - so I decided to go there show on August 14th. I got free tickets so that was the real deciding factor! Anyway, the guys I'm going with have absolutely no idea who the opening act is so I made them this CD to sort of familiarize them with Malkmus. Most of the songs are from there latest album, "Pig Lib." I threw in some Pavement songs just for the fun of it. You really can't go wrong with having Pavement on a mix....

i like the self-titled album more than the new one, but i guess "pig lib" has its good points. still, you left off "the hook!?" that song should be required listening for the human race.

The only reason I went with more "Pig Lib" stuff is that they'll probably play more songs from that album on this tour than there first...at least that's what I think.

Pavement was one of my 5 favorite bands of the '90's, but Malkmus' solo career has been pretty uninteresting. Like Daniel below, I preferred his first to the frequently dull Pig-Lib. When he learns to deal with his past and starts playing both his solo & Pavement stuff live (like, say, Paul Westerberg vis a vis the Replacements), I might be interested in seeing him.

Yeah, I agree that SM's solo career hasn't been too great but he and the Jicks are quite good live and worth seeing. I, personally, like "Pig Lib" better than his debut. Its more straight-forward and less gimmicky. And with that said, I actually prefer PSOI's debut over any both Malkmus' album. Oh, and, Malkmus has been incorporating a few Pavement songs in his set every once in a while and the band actually played a whole set of Pavement songs at a show in Milwaukee a couple of months ago.
