Comment:
My first jazz mix. I'm still a lightweight so I only know the known artists right now. Title from an episode of the Simpsons featuring Bleeding Gums Murphy.Feedback:
"Lightweight" or not, you picked great songs by great artists. I'm not a huge Brubeck fan (although I'd never say he's "bad" or untalented), but otherwise you're spot-on with my personal jazz favorites.
NIce collection. I'll disagree with Rob & congratulate you on the Brubeck - he & Paul Desmond introduced some interesting time experiments to jazz that influenced a lot of later work. Check out early Dizzy for some other interesting & fun stuff. The title actually comes from Carole King's Jazzman. NIce title for the mix.
Quite superb! For a first (modern) jazz mix, this is a real winner.
This IS a nice first jazz mix. If not for Desmond's Take Five, Brubeck would today enjoy the (relatively obscure) status of, say, a Don Ellis (another experimenter in time) or Lennie Tristano -- solid, interesting (innovative?) musicians but not 'stars'. I like Brubeck, but he's over-rated, and I think his 'experiments' would have been conducted in spite of him. That said, I think he has had influence, and deserves credit for it. I just don't think his star should shine as bright as it does.
Lots of great picks.
Actually, nothing is lightweight on this! Very nice.
Wow. That is all I have to say.
Cool mix, though I'm not a huge jazz fan. However, as much as I love Bleeding Gums Murphy (I even have his action figure), he's quoting Carole King's "Jazzman"
When the Jazzman's testifying, a faithless man believes, he can sing you into paradise or bring you to your knees. It's a gospel kind-a feeling, a touch of Georgia slide, a song of pure revival and a style that sanctified. Jazzman, take my blues away. Make my pain the same as yours with every change you play. Jazzman, oh Jazzman. When the Jazzman's signifying and the band is winding low. It's the late night side of morning in the darkness of his soul. He can fill a room with sadness as he fills his horn with tears. He can cry like a fallen angel when risin' time is near. Jazzman, take my blues away. Make my pain the same as yours with every change you play. Oh, lift me, won't you lift me with every turn around. Play it sweetly, take me down, oh Jazzman.

Woops! Should have read No Borders' comment first. Never mind.
Great picks!
