GBV called it quits on New Years Eve. Along with Pavement and Sebadoh, they were the quintessential rock band of the mid 90s. Anyway, like probably 90% of GBV's fanbase, I am a huge fan of there early to mid 90s output, and this mix concentrates on that era. The stuff since Mag Earwhig has been pretty mediocre. I only scratched the surface here, and that's a legacy GBV left behind. I could easily pick 20 different GBV songs and this mix would still be pretty rad.

I'm a big GBV fan but I can never remember the titles of their songs. Maybe it's because they're so prolific and/or because the titles are often non sequiturs. Anyway, I'm pretty sure this mix is great, from the titles that have stuck in my memory. I agree with your assessment of their decline after Mag Earwig. Robert Pollard and Tobin Sprout made a great team.

"Days seem to turn into nights..." Go GBV!, a great band with driving riffs and intelligent lyrics.
You're right about their output/selections; other faves are Chicken Blows and Blimps go 90, which could have been the alternate to the Breeders' Drivin' on Nine on my Frankenstein thing.
Great mix!

I must check them out. I have heard good things, but never really heard them.

Nice. You zeroed in on the only period that I like by them--I'm totally with you about Mag Earwig signalling the end of something great. To be honest, though, even their best stuff doesn't sound nearly as interesting to me as it did at the time... maybe it's Pollard's unbelievably irritating practice of releasing every fart that he unleashes into a tape recorder, or the blind, slathering worship of a substantial portion of this band's fans, or the fact that his lyrics add up to nothing, for the most part, or... you get the idea. That said, the man could write a great melody and the lo-fi enthusiasm of the original(ish) band collective from the mid-90s is undeniable. Nice job.

Earwigs are creepy and always a bad sign... Nice mix -- looks way better than the "best of" that came out awhile back.

Very nice collection. I only discoverd GBV a couple of years back through our AOTM friends. I went out and got The Best of Guided By Voices: Human Amusements at Hourly Rates which was a good intro to the band for the uninitiated. Then I started going after the individual albums like Bee Thousand. Interesting stuff.

Fine mix! Chasing Heather Crazy and Game of Pricks are two songs I never tire of hearing.

I forgot to tell you that I did a mix for this same period called "The history book has lost its binding", if you want to compare notes.

A great band - but they are not huge or widely available in the UK (mores the pity). Most of my knowledge comes from my learned mates at AOTM. I definitely need to know more.

I totally agree with you Rob. When Pollard fired the whole band, effectively ruining GBV (Tobin Sprout was the fucking man!), I lost interest. Well, I wasn't a fan when the firing took place, but the band went downhill fast. I think Pollard is one of the most prolific artists around. He's written a lot of shit, but when he hits, he HITS. And that's why I probably could never stay away from his music because there's always some good stuff in it.

Fantastic; I agree with everyone else who's commented about the era you've chosen to concentrate on - most of my favourite GBV tunes are from then, and are on this mix! Very nice tribute.

I agree with Salman, Tobin is the man! Good stuff here though...

Yeah - those guys were (are?) pretty big drunks - but drunkest band ever? What about The Replacements? Or The Faces?

I'm with pretty much everyone here concerning the preference of the mid-1990's output. However, I would like to put in a good word for the phenomenal 'Isolation Drills'. Sure, no Tobin, and it's hi-fi as all hell... but it's a classic. Nothing but good stuff on that one as well. Possibly the last great album we'll ever see out of Pollard.
