Comment:

Ever get dumbstruck when people ask you what type of music you listen to? A million different responses always go off in my head when I hear that question, but I still never know how to answer it. I find it rather weird saying something general like rock or something becaue it isn't entirely correct, and it just feels incomplete whenever I say this. It's weird. Basically, this mix encompasses some of the songs I've liked in the last few months. I wish I could give this to everyone who has asked me in the past few months.

Some good tracks on this. As for what type of music do yo listen to.I always anything for Chuck Berry to The Beastie Boys. That seems to do the trick.

Boy, Salman, you sure listen to some bitchin' music. I guess John listens to Music That Gets Filed Under "B."

Kinda like the part in Nick Hornby's High Fidelity, where the music-loving, list-making narrator, when asked by a cute journalist to name his favorite albums, totally flubs it. It seems the more obsessive one is about music, the harder to encapsulate it into a pithy answer. I tend to respond "rock & roll, but not the mainstream kind." But almost everyone will then follow up with a request for some examples, and it's a matter of coming up with the 3 or 4 that neatly define your taste. Obviously, your taste is far too diverse, and no one will stick around for a 19-artist list, so you'll clearly have to delete some of these...

Looks like you could borrow Marlon Brando's answer from "The Wild One" :
('What are you rebelling against?'
'What have you got?')

At any rate, this is a good answer.

yep, i hear and sympathize. growing up in small-town saskatchewan, the local radio station played some nice variety, but by the time i got to university, everything was either programmed as country or classic rock. lucky for me, i snagged a part-time job as a record store clerk and was able to break out of the mainstream mindset. like taking the red pill tho, once you free yourself from the matrix, there's no turning back.

thanks again for the maow track - i still have to scope out the new 'new pornographers' disk. hey, i'm in ottawa next week (your neck of the woods, iirc ?) - where's a decent music store in our fair capital city ?

Or just say both kinds , "country & western." Yeh I know it's an old one but still brings a smile to my face. Neat answer to a question that does my head in too. These days I rarely get asked what I listen to, most people over here in France think my music taste is from another planet; me I'd have it no other way lol.

I always get dumbstruck when faced with that question and I devised an old (now slightly outdated, but not much) mix for the same purpose ("Gazing at the navel..."). I'm with musicgnome re: the quality of your answer, though.

If i owned 5 cds the question would be an easy one to answer. But it does seem the more more music you know the harder it is to answer. A fine answer this comp is tho.

Damn! French Connection stole my answer. Yes, I'm always dumbstruck when I get this question, especially when it's asked by someone who knows little about music. I usually mutter "eclectic" and run like hell. Cool mix by the way. I think you've answered the question.

Rebellious Jukebox sounds even better in 2005 than it did then. Maybe it's a question of context. Dig track 3 very much too.
