The so called "Great War" began in August 1914 and ended in November 1918. There was never a war like it, before or since. Each year I, and a few like-minded friends, take a trip to Northern France and the fields of Flanders, Belgium. It is truly humbling to see these wide swathes of countryside, dotted with beautifully maintained cemeteries of all sizes. I defy any who visit to remain unmoved by the experience.I realise that almost a hundred years have passed since World War One, and several great and horrible wars and battles may be fresher in the collective memory. Not least the World War of 1939-1945 - for which we owe a great debt to so many. However, this is the one that binds us all. The scale of it, the stupidity, the futility, the horror, the madness; and above all of that, the nobility of spirit that led so many to heed the call to arms. It is this sense of purpose, this need to stand together, this outpouring of collective humanity that breaks all barriers between races and creeds. This despicable blot on the landscape of mankind is also its greatest hope. We are all connected in some way to this conflict, to this time, to those who fought and died there.Oh for pity's sake, you may well be thinking, this is a mix site. We don't need this angst-ridden pontificating here. You may well be correct. Just move on to another if you wish.I made this mix shortly after returning from one of the aforementioned trips. The images and feelings still fresh in my mind. It is the recorded recollections of a few survivors and a selection of songs/tunes that made sense to me in this context.I was very gratified at the reception a recent "classical" mix of mine received here at AOTM. This has led me to believe that this mix will, at the very least, be treated with fairness and the requisite open mind.I promise to return to a more poptastic vein very soon. It's just the time of year, no doubt. If there is any message to be gleaned, then perhaps it's this - never forget.

Even if I hated the music, I love reading your descriptive commentary.When I get home from work tonight, I'm going to download all of these songs and have a new moderately depressing mix to listen to on my way to work. I was wondering, do you live on this site? I get comments from you a split second after I post. You are either really bored, or completely in love with my mixing skills. Well it did have one good side effect: the chemotherapy drugs now used against cancer have their origin in the chemical warfare research of the WWI era. Nice mix and thoughtful notes.
Yeah, this is pretty compelling. Very, very sensitive with a character that echoes Over The Rise by Big Audio Dynamite. For a very important mix, j'accuse! J'accuse!!
Nice work, Tom. Without getting into a `this-side'/'that-side debate (which certainly is an option, but I'm not taking it there), I'm appreciating this from both a current, and historical perspective. I'm sure I'd shed more than a tear were I overlooking the cemeteries you reference.

Wonderful. The 5-7 section is incredibly moving as is that particular version of Pie Jesu. All in all, a beautiul mix.

Living in France one stills feels the presence & aftermath of thte war to end all wars. I visited The Somme last year & found it carries an eerie atmosphere to this day. Next time you're in Northern France look me up. Beautiful mix what more can I say.

I read through the first paragraph, without reading the tracklist first-so I could take them in in context, and thought immediately of the Farm. Bravo! Great tracklist, great sentiment, and I'm sure...a great mix.

bang on with your comments. Looks like a great mix. The cemetries are strangely beautiful. We searched for a lost relative a few years ago. We did the research before we went to get the grave site etc, and eventually found him. You are right, it is impossible to be unmoved.

The "stupidity" and futility etc., it may be inferred, became apparent after the call was heeded. I would not wish to diminish the spirit in which people, of all the nations and sides involved, went to fight; nor their motivation for doing so. If I was unclear about this, I am sorry. I make no attempt to judge in my notes. That's a debate for another time perhaps...

Hi Nomates! You changed my opinion. I can try to comment some mixes in future. So here we GO! First nice story, i can imagine that "mountain" scenery and this mix sounds great in mentally. I dont know all these songs, but I do really really like Paul Simon. The Boy In The Bubble is in Graceland album if i can remember correctly. And it's her best album. I cant remember that song right now. I can remember i have heard Gabriel FaurT somewhere (still i cant remember him ;)) I'm sure this is good mix but i really don't know other stuff. --Little Nicky--

Sorry, snooping. I was wondering why you put the Paul Simon song on it so I put it on, and It hit me and made sense. That song used to make me tear up a little.... and my favorite song when I was Little Nicky's age. Looking forward to more, Nomates!

Pontificate away, sir. I had a similar experience when I was at a small, mostly unknown place called Murfreesboro, Tennessee. An ancestor is buried there, along with thousands of others. Tiny (about 8" tall) headstones, covering a field.
