Comment:
The major Fashion Weeks have all finished now, so this could be considered fashionably late...This started life as a mix of songs concerned with fashion or commonly used in association with it, but then it started to take another route when I looked at how music was chosen for catwalk shows and what styles you're most likely to hear at any given designer - that's when it got really interesting! So it eventually became a mix inspired by catwalk shows, with an attempt to emulate a playlist that might be used in one of them. Of course, I have neither the skills nor the equipment to imitate the work of a DJ, so this is first and foremost a collection of music which showcases the different styles of music that might be heard on a catwalk. Well-established fashion houses, and particularly Italian ones, such as Dior and Dolce & Gabbana, frequently stick to a more European-influenced dance music sound. Young houses who often wish to market themselves with a degree of "edginess" also use strong beats, but more within the genres of electro-pop and funk. They're also much more likely to throw in left-field choices from 60s girl groups or obscure bubblegum pop and the DJs commissioned to create the setlists often make their own mash-ups for the show. A really good example of a designer where this sort of combination might be heard is the ever-unpredictable Heatherette. Meanwhile, there are the fashion houses who just wouldn't suit wild eclecticism, such as Temperley, noted for creating sophisticated, feminine designs - at one of these shows you'd be much more likely to hear Latin rhythms, classical or something generally smooth and sensual. So while the mix tries to incorporate elements of all of these, it would be almost impossible to do full justice to all of them, so the focus here is mainly on the "young designer" route of unpredictability, a more electronic sound and quirky selections. The kinds of music selected vary enormously, but the main objective seems to be to select a setlist that will please both the audience and the models. The latter group, understandably, like a strong rhythm and smooth DJ-ing - one of the reasons house music is so often heard at fashion shows. House music is also one genre that has enough variety within it and quirkiness to reflect idiosyncrasies that a designer wishes to bring out. For the audience, meanwhile, you have to remember that every aspect of the show is ultimately designed around selling the clothes. Just as several different styles of music applied to the same piece of film footage can produce completely different effects, so too can the music that an audience hears while watching a catwalk have an influence over how they feel about the clothes they are seeing. And this, in turn, can affect the model's attitude too - a good audience response combined with interesting music helps them to work what they are wearing. The image is from Heatherette's Spring/Summer 2006 show, and the title of the mix is a quotation I saw recently on a billboard advertising a fashion-related TV programme being broadcast here soon. I should also point out that, aside from what I learned for the purpose of making this mix, I know next to nothing about fashion.
Feedback:
This is beyond brilliant Siobhan. So well considered and executed. It's great to see PWEI on any mix and it sits brilliantly with your other fitting choices. Fantastic mix.
Sashays down the catwalk like a slinky little fox
wow, this is brilliant in a sprawling sort of way...excellent
I'm glad to have a front row seat for this one...5 stars.
Yowza, impecably researched and presented, and worth five stars just for the two soulwax mash-ups.
...looks REALLY great, love the CSS through Birds and Brass stretch especially!!
OMG Siobhan, this is way fabulous. Does this come in a video version? Here come the fashionistas, with an awesome soundtrack.
This is absolutely tremendously fantastic. Lots of fun and lots of great tunes, coupled with an interesting theme.
Interesting theme. I have a hard time believing that you know next to nothing about fashion.
Awesome. Maybe your best yet? Hmmmm..........And, not to be catty, but those covergirls are soooo last season. ;)
adoring
I'll have a pound then! Bet you know more about fashion than me though, couldn't tell you the last time I bought an article of clothing, I measure the cost of clothes against how many cd's I could buy for the same outlay!!! Haute Couture of a mix it has to be said.
so fab ! *air kiss* dear siobhan, you really must let me know which pair of shoes i'd have to give up to get a copy ! or would mix trade suffice ?
Epic! I could definitely vogue on the catwalk to this monster of a mix. This should be Mix of the (Fashion) Week.
Epic indeed. Quite an intimidating mix to look at, but it sounds great. Excellent mix.
Amazing. And my choice for MOTW, hands down. Love the NYPC, LCD, The Ones, Sparks & Guetta especially. Great artwork also..
Incredibly cool.
Late to the party, because I was busy selling flesh. Just fantastic. The Samantha Fu track blows my mind!
well now people are starting to take down the party decorations and put away the chairs and I'm just arriving! had to come in to work on a Saturday to catch up, but this made it quite enjoyable. loved the Justin Le Grand, New Young Pony Club, Indeep vs. Nena and the Presets to Shock bits. lots of fun from cover to cover, girl.
*Sashay shante - it don't matter what you wear -they're checkin' out your savoir faire*
Finger-snaps for this!
Finger-snaps for this!
Perfectly executed. I love the quirkiness of the Neneh Cherry and Rick James in the midst of the other nice bits. No Highstepper? ;-)
