Fashionology!: Fashion in song from the cabaret to the catwalk
Comment:
1. What could one possibly say about Marlene Dietrich that she hasn't already said better herself? In "Ich bin die fesche Lola," the first famous female to sport trousers plays a performer who is starving for your attention. Just don't come too close - and keep your paws off her pianola, please.2. In this smart highlight from his biggest and blandest recording years, Bowie and his goon squad take to the catwalk in search of dance moves.
3. Beck pries his pawnshop brain from his skull, swaps out pants and shirtsleeves, and hits the road in search of the least common denominator in "Ready-Made."
4. Long before Run DMC started rapping about their favorite sneakers brand, Elvis Presley gave Marx a run for his product fetish in "Blue Suede Shoes."
5. In "Sex Appeal," Georg Danzer plays a player who doesn't possess much - aside from the key to your sweetheart's bedchamber.
6. In "Dress" PJ Harvey rocks your socks off while rightly reminding you just how hard it is to do that in a dress.
7. The London Suedes make calendar girls coo in chorus as they tenderly milk the treacle from the Brit-Pop vine in "She's In Fashion."
8. Fred Astaire seguTs to the swinging side of the tracks to mix with the misfits - and ape their look - in "Puttin' On The Ritz."
9. The jockey at your local radio station may never have heard of him. In Tokyo, though, Godzilla is but a smurf in stature compared to Tom Waits - at least, so he sings in "Big In Japan."
10. Kraftwerk practice passive-agressive feminism in the glum electro-pop of "Das Modell."
11. Johnny Cash shows his true colours with an intensity that will burn the smile right off your face in "The Man In Black."
12. James Brown implores women to slip into something less comfortable in "Hot Pants."
13. "Zieh' dir was an, MSdchen!" Wir Sind Helden snarl back, demanding that their groupies show a little less dTcolletT, and a lot more self-respect.
14. Elvis Costello has a bone to pick with you about the way you look at "This Year's Girl."
15. Nancy Sinatra wraps her arms around a sweet send-up, and her voice around a coin-operated horn section in "Oh! You Beautiful Doll."
16. The Smiths defend the right of every human being to dress as oddly as they wish in "Vicar In A Tutu."
17. Prince and Sheila E. make bedroom eyes go pop! in the prissy catwalk anthem "U Got The Look."
18. The Replacements boldly evoke a genderless future age in "Androgynous."
19. Broken-hearted El Canto Del Loco equates love with shoes in a store window in "Zapatillas."
20. The Kinks poke fun at the slavish behaviour of a an nber-dandy in "Dedicated Follower of Fashion."
21. Mark E. of the Eels tries to make it through the "Fashion Awards" without slitting his wrists.
22. Never mind the Slimfast! Massive T÷ne love you just the way you are, and their song "Topmodel" is hell-bent on making booties of all sizes shake.
23. Supermodel-cum-chanteuse Carla Bruni knows what it's like to be the most beautiful person in the neighbourhood. "Le plus beau du quartier" reveals that she can turn heads with her songs, too.
Feedback:
I once was a dedicated follower of fashion but now am just anti-fashion in workout gear and jeans. La plus ca change ... Looks like a terrific mix and am d/ling now.
This reminds me of another recent mix about a sharp-dressed mixer, but yours is more cutting-edge-fashion oriented. Strut your musical stuff!
Excellent!
I second Mixxer's comment, great selection of artists!
finally tried this outfit on for size at work yesterday; cool concept. really liked the London Suedes track, and the Nancy Sinatra and Wir Sind Helden too. Tom Waits, PJ Harvey and Prince/Sheena Easton are old favorites as well. nice work, 1895.
