Comment:
Theme? Narrative? A razor's edge...., all mixes, to my mind, have a "theme"....even if undetected by it's maker. True, some are more obvious than others. But work a "narrative", and you become infinitely more aware of the ramifications of the choices....this started out as the culmination of a "mix in my mind" about ships, the sea, 'big water', etc....I had collected several pieces just for it.....but around the third song, and the "map" I'd written down of the mix, I detected a 'narrative'....the rest 'wrote itself.' Inspiration from the poem "A Nautical Ballad": "A capital ship for a sailing trip was the Walloping Window Blind, no gale that blew dismayed her crew nor troubled the Captain's mind..."/ "She had a tragic fascination for witnessing the boats..."/ "So we sailed...thru' the night...on our way...down among the Dead Men...."/ "Maybe he's caught in the legend,Maybe he's caught in the mood. Maybe these maps and legends have been misunderstood, been misunderstood. So, let's hope it's "red skies at night.., not red skies in morning...." (My only regret is not having a cd copy of Henry Badowski's "Swimming With the Fish In the Sea"....one of the most beautiful songs I know, mine is on vinyl....sorry all, we may be the worse for it.) Cast off the bow lines, unfurl the sails....we sail in search of a "great perhaps!"
Feedback:
a great mix and a tremendous cover. Another one for the must have pile, I fear. well done!
Great mix, like the theme and the cover.
My friend, predictably awesome in every regard. Salute!
stunning
This is incredible, with a cover to match.
This looks great. Any chance of a trade? The Townes Van Zandt song "Silver Ships of Andilar" is another that might fit your theme.
AHOY ! Looks like great boatload of tunes...& the cover's seaworthy too.
I am speachless!!
Looks great there, good sir.
Some great selections Valis -- Dukes, R.E.M and even Wire Train. You showed great restraint by not including Styx's "Come Sail Away"! ;)
Ah! I see you and your wife have cast off from the oil rig in search of more adventurous shores! Wonderful theme. I know few of these, but I trust your choices like a ship captain trusts the wind in his sails!
Die!

Nice stuff. Jackdaw with Crowbar's "Sink Sank Sunk" would've made a great closing track. And thanx for not including Rod Stewart. :)
looks really great.
fetch me my astrolabe! fabulous idea, music, and artwork. one of your finest creations.
Wire Train, wow. "All mixes, to my mind, have a 'theme'....even if undetected by it's maker." Right on.
The only thing this mix needs is something off of The Divine Comedy's "Promenade" album. Good work.
I am loving this mix. It's like a tour with a modern Capt. Nemo.
Very cool.
Very cool.
Would love to trade with you valis as soon as possible.
A small wonder and a veritable achievement, since this works perfectly in terms of narative as well as in terms of flow, and that's certainly no mean feat. Plus I've been on the lookout (sic) for this Doves track for quite a while without ever knowing what it was, so that makes it even better. Fangs, dood.
actually i just listen to this today and it's a really nice mix even if the songs number don't match ;), but that doesn't matter, great stuff esp Doves, Magnetic fields and long time forgotted Flash & the pan
Man, that Van Morrison song is tremendously underrated. I've been trying to work it into a mix for a while. The other stuff's great too.
Arrived at this via Burns' Heavy Water & beautifully themed it is too!
