Comment:
Roll up, roll up.., introducing the Squires of the Subterrain! The Squires are really a one-man show from the brain of his Highness, Chris Earl. Hailing from Rochester, New York, and virtually omnipresent with a number of bands, the Squires project stems from his passionate- and peripatetic devotion, to the works of the Smile-era Brian Wilson, the Beatles middle-period, Syd the madcap, and XTC.(The Squires name is an homage and a nod to the latter band's side project: the Dukes of Stratosfear, as well as a reference to the production of the works from his "subterranean" basement studio.) As Chris is quoted as stating: "I yearn to hear more of that kind of music...if it takes writing it, so be it." (AMG) Mainly released on cassette through his own label Rocket Racket Records, the re-issues are finally available on cd. In the words of Stanton Swihart, of AMG: "It's as if the Beach Boys had joined forces with the Monkees as superheroes in a Saturday morning cartoon, part Hanna-Barbera, part Sid & Marty Krofft, with Pee Wee Herman as the communal band's manager. This, then, might represent the ideal soundtrack to such a strange hybrid, a rocketship of pop music that vaults listeners through a weird universe of three-minute psychedelic jukebox tunes." Further, "..with 'Untitled No. 17,' the Squires of the Subterrain again prove that, although tucked away from the commercial world, Earl has inherited and internalized better than anyone the daunting mantle of Brian Wilson's acid-addled art." Two years ago, in 2000, Chris was approached by fellow psych' meister "Big Boy Pete" (a/k/a Pete Miller) to collaborate on some songs Pete had written in the mid-to-late '60s and been deemed "too far out" by record companies. These sounds finally saw the light of day with the release of "Big Boy Pete TREATS."(songs denoted with * ) Magic. Pure magic. (I think 1969 coulda' used "Be Yourself"!)I've found through numerous e-mails to "the Squire", he's a great guy. I'd urge anyone mildly interested to grab his stuff directly at his website: squiresofthesubterrain.com ...., tell him: "valis sent me!" And say "Hi!" for me....Feedback:
Well Valis, you've certainly piqued my interest.
Yup Valis, you've piqued mine too. I have to have a copy of this. I really dig the cover too!
looks cool, my friend! I'm sure I want this, too
Based on your lengthy and thoughtful comments, this sounds like a "must hear"! Actually I was expecting a Dandy Warhols mix when I saw the title. I'll e-mail you soon my friend.
I was expecting a T.Rex mix. I'll be checking out that web site soon. Are you sure the band's not named for CHRIS Squire?
wow, certainly sounds interesting!
Hell yes, you told me about this guy the other day. Of course, I NEEEED to have 'n' hear this. Asap. The addres is correct. ;-)
i don't know this band but the cover is really cool
I know nothing about this band except what you have turned me on to and I see there is much to be turned on to.
Hot-sausage damage...gotta get my gritties on this too!
