Comment:
Can't say I've ever jumped on the Radiohead bandwagon. To me, they combine elements of the angst-rock that populates today's "modern rock" radio stations with the bombastic excesses of mid-period U2 and various Euro-synth bands. And while they've come up with some respectable artistic statements, they remind of a modern variation of the Alan Parsons Project -- highly literate, technically brilliant music devoid of emotional connection. That said, they do have some really great songs. So I hooked up with the resident Radiohead fan in my office, who is familiar with my obsessive single-artist mixology and deposited his Radiohead collection on my desk last Friday. I spent the weekend sifting through the discs for highlights, arranging them for maximum stylistic variation (rather than going with the basic chronological approach). I ended up liking this far more than I expected.
Feedback:
Weird. I was honestly just about to submit my revised Radiohead mix. I have to say that I like them a lot, despite my genuine desire to resist liking them. Their new album could be my album of the year thus far.
I also just compleated an all Radiohead mix for my girlfriend. There is quite a bit of overlap, with just a few notable gaps (Fitter Happier, Talk Show Host, Exit Music, How to Dissapear Compleatly) While I agree that they are very literate and technically brilliant, I also feel a great deal of emosional connection with thier music. (Allthough I couldn't explain what any song means for the life of me) To me, they are the musical Jackson Pollock... so much going on that it could become noise, but if you loose yourself in it, patterns will emerge, leaving you with meaning.
A good mix.
P.S. Can you tell I'm an avid fan?
