Comment:

I saw her open for Neil Young a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed her show. Went on a quick borrowing spree to round up her last 5 albums, and here we are. I'm still not a fan of the twangier country stuff, and the ballads, while often beautiful, don't always make for great mix-tape material, so most of this leans heavily on her more upbeat, rock/blues-tinged material. Lots here from Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, her finest crossover album, though I also took a bunch from Essence, a more folk/ballad-oriented album in the classic singer/songwriter mold. Not as much a fan of the less innovative albums that preceded Car Wheels, though stuff like "Changed The Locks" is essential.

"Righteously"?!?!?!?!? Ick! Otherwise, some fine selections, despite your brush-off of my favorite Lucinda song, "Greenville." Props for including "Drunken Angel", though.

The best song ever? Where's the "song"? I just hear a skanky 50-yr-old woman trying to get her groove on by rapping tunelessly over generic blooz-rawk backing. ;-)

I have to admit "Righteously" wasn't among my top picks for the mix, but I like the guitars, and I still have a nice memory of it from her live show, so that made it a sentimental pick. (Incidentally, the other highlights of the live show were unquestionably "Joy," "Changed The Locks," and "Those Three Days.")

Yeah, I saw her play it live last summer and it filled me with dread, as the other tune from the then-unreleased latest album that most stuck in my memory from that show was "Sweet Side" (which is even worse than "Righteously"). By the way, I forgot to throw you some praise for "Metal Firecracker", another top favorite of mine.

I guess what I've heard of L.W. has been mostly her singer-songwriter side rather than any
too-twangy stuff, but I've liked what I've heard. I'd like to try this out as a sampler, if you see any of my mixes you'd like to trade for . . .
