Comment:
An extension of my (now really quite unhealthy) Smiths obsession - this is a collection of covers of my very favourite band's songs, whose variety, I think, just goes to prove their influence - I mean, their songs appealed to Belle and Sebastian, Anthrax and everyone in between. Unfortunately, this selection isn't comprehensive and there are some great covers which I haven't been able to get hold of, like Duncan Sheik's version of Reel Around The Fountain, or Badly Drawn Boy doing Oscillate Wildly, among others - by the way, if you know of good Smiths covers then please do tell me! :) This explains the repetitiveness a little, for which I apologise, but some songs, ESPECIALLY Please Please..., do seem to have a lot of cover appeal. The highlights on this are, in my opinion, the interesting Frank & Walters cover, the cute Braid one, the Supergrass track - it's really, really excellent and is complete with a fade out-in at the end, and the tracks by EBTG and Face To Face - the latter especially does the original justice. The best of the "repeats" are (of Boy With The Thorn...) the Jeff Buckley version, of Bigmouth... the Placebo, and I like the Muse version of Please Please.... But enough over-analysis; hopefully I can improve this by getting a hold of some more covers. Meanwhile, though, hooray for The Smiths!

Feedback:
There's a new tribute album out on Matinee records of indiepop Smiths covers called Romantic Is Square And Hip Is Aware. Look for it on parasol.com or just google it for reviews. One day I'll actually find an affordable copy of that Dream Academy cover, it's stunning.
i got a really great version of "there's alight" but unfortunally I don't have tha name of the artist, I can e-mail it to you if you want
There is nothing unhealthy about being obsessed with the Smiths. Obsess away.
This is a fantastic mix. It inspired mine and I note we do not have much overlap. I would love to hear your stuff.

This is a real Gem! I totally agree with the your opinion on the Frank and Walters cover even if Keats and Yeats swap sides! I would even give an honourable mention to the TaTu cover of 'How Soon' which has a certain Trevor Horn wall-of-sound edge to it. Its interesting to see the huge groundswell of frustration that the Dream Academy version of please please is unavailable. When I firat heard this version I thought it was the worst depths of '80's Fleetwood Mac saccharine schmaltz, but now 20 years later it has a certain innocent soft focus charm... much like old episodes of Robin of Sherwood.
