Comment:
Yep, there are quite a few of these on the site already - but this is just my contribution and was something I had been meaning to do for a while, since...well, what can I say - I love Belle and Sebastian. Whittling my favourites down to one CD's worth was difficult, though when making single artist mixes, I think of that as the challenge! Although there are fewer EP tracks than album ones, generally I think that the band's best work is to be found on the EPs - most notably Lazy Line Painter Jane. In terms of albums, first of all I love Fold Your Hands Child... despite the fact that it doesn't get a brilliant rap, and although I wouldn't exactly say that Tigermilk was a "life-changing experience" (as I have heard it described), it is, without a doubt, a complete gem and my favourite of theirs (though it's very closely followed by If You're Feeling Sinister) simply because of its completely refreshing quality; it's one of the few albums I listen to without skipping a single track - the title of the mix also comes from the somewhat precious story of Belle and Sebastian which is found inside Tigermilk. However, I Could Be Dreaming had to be cut VERY reluctantly because of its length - other cuts were If You're Feeling Sinister, Storytelling and Mayfly. Oh yeah, and isn't it nice when you share a hometown with one of your favourite bands? :)
Feedback:
Yup it's nice, more than nice, to share a home-town with one of yr favourite bands! The Cure come from down the road, though I wouldn't list them as a particular favourite. Re: Belle & Sebastian - I remember writing on Rob's mix that I like them and then I don't and so it goes..Lazy Line Painter, Legal Man and Asleep On A sunbeam are my favourites. I do think the lyric writing is of a high standard, though the whimsy often grates to my ears. I see them as sort of UK eccentrics alongside bands like Felt and the magnificent Monochrome Set, though, they more often than not, remind me of The Beautiful South whom I have the same feelings for!
lovely stuff from a lovely band
Well Bath is yet to provide a favourite band... Tears for Fears anyone? You're spoilt for choice in Glasgow. Anyway some nice choices here. Can't go wrong with B&S really.
Looks good. I've got a two-volume set called "Taking pictures of your obsessions". I'd be curious to hear your take on them.
I thought the first record was amazaing a total breath of fresh air compared to everything else coming out. But then I thought the songs got a little samey and they seemed to be missing the charm (and very subtle sense of humor) that hooked me in the first place. I was quite surprised at how great their album from last year becasue I had all but dismissed them. And you lead off my favorite B&S song.
This is fantastic.
