Comment:

A Kubrick-inspired mix this time, and the same deal as with the other "director" mixes I've done - using tracks that remind me of the music and atmosphere in his movies, but without trying to directly copy the soundtracks. There was a bit of a problem due to the fact that the music in Kubrick's films is most effective when it's juxtaposed with a scene that you wouldn't normally expect to see alongside it (e.g. the use of the William Tell Overture in A Clockwork Orange), which obviously can't really be reflected too well in a mix. So instead, I tried to juxtapose styles that normally wouldn't be found together; the effect isn't quite the same but hopefully it works nevertheless! While I looked at the music used in all the movies, admittedly A Clockwork Orange was the biggest inspiration - what a great soundtrack. The title (which might not be too exact...) is from there, and the picture's taken from a Full Metal Jacket poster.

This is absolutely excellent, and I think it captures the mood of Kubrick perfectly. A fine job!

Oooh, wow! This is, er, so strange a concoction as to make it thoroughly intriguing. And the inclusion of Francis Lai's "Bilitis" (!!! Anybody remember David Hamilton?) is, uh, daring, to say the very least. P.S.: Where's good ol' Ludwig van? ;)
2P.S.: Pity that Kubrick had to go with a lamentable piece of crap like "Eyes Wide Shut" (easily his worst). Otherwise, his track record would've been virtually spotless.

looking like a nice soundtrack and I second what Thomas said about Eyes wide shut, a really crappy piece

Well, my only stipulation for this was I didn't want to use any artists that were already in any Kubrick soundtracks...but I do love a good bit of Ludwig Van too! :)

Another winner. "Shot Down" would be a great pick for any soundtrack! I had the Full Metal Jacket poster on my wall in college for two years just because it had one of my all time fave movie taglines: "In Vietnam the wind doesn't blow, it sucks".

Nice - the concept has turned out to be a really interesting mix. A strange concoction, as Thomas says.

Neat. I hated Eyes Wide Shut, as well, and also hated the second half of Full Metal Jacket...

Excellent and evocative melange. I couldn't watch "Eyes Wide Shut". Saw "2001" on a big screen in the last couple of years and was blown away, again.

Yeah, early Kubrick is the best, and this mix is worthy of "Lolita" & "Strangelove" though I doubt those were your main inspirations. I'd like to hear this if you'd be interested in a trade?

this one turned up in a search for mixes containing "The Mystic Moods Orchestra." It's wonderful! Film and music are two of my passions, so it was great to stumble upon your mixes inspired by Kubrick, Lynch, Wes Anderson... it's a terrific idea. One of my favorite films is Kubrick's Paths of Glory. Obviously, I'm way too late for this debate, but, in spite of the distracting star power of Kidman and Cruise, I found Eyes Wide Shut to be provocative, mysterious and satisfying. I was glad he'd finished one last film before leaving this world behind.
