Comment:
There's a guy somewhere on the site who says that one of his favourite things to do is make Cure / Smiths mixes - and he does a fine job of them. Similarly I think that single artist Smiths mixes have become one of my favourite pasttimes, though the motive behind them seems to be kind of a personal mission to convert everyone I know to The Smiths (provided they don't already know them!) Anyway, this is the latest (hope-filled) installment and is for my parents (their favourite bands being Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones) - recently they saw Morrissey being interviewed on the Jonathan Ross show on British TV and were quite perplexed by him and how he could possibly have such a rabid fanbase, so I thought I'd show them where it all began; I may follow it up with a Morrissey mix later! More than usual, the choices here were based on lyrics, and one reason I like making these is because I "rediscover" songs that weren't favourites of mine - for example, I was never really a fan of "You Just Haven't..." - and then I used it here, and after a few listens, I began to enjoy it immensely. The Sandie Shaw collaboration doesn't make the finished product 100% pure, uncut Smiths, but I thought that the version of Hand In Glove would be an interesting inclusion! The title's from Rubber Ring, a last-minute cut. I worry about myself, really I do.
Feedback:
what i want to know is when volume 20, 0000 comes out. ;-) in the meantime, fine as always.
there's always room for a Moz mix
And, really, there's no reason for a Stones or Floyd fan to not get the Smiths (I know - double negative - bad form) - there are many similar themes of alienation running through Smiths & Floyd material; and there is that anger/hunger in the early (at least) Stones and Smiths. Marr's ringing guitar sound and the great hooks are easy to enjoy - the only thing I think that turns people off to Morrissey or the Smiths is his somewhat fey presentation/vocal style - but to me, therein lies much of their charm - that and his cutting wit & turn of a phrase
The dissertation has ended - I think the 'rents will like this - it is well-put-together.

Ditto p!
...aside from Johnny Marr I just have never enjoyed 'em...., glad you do though!
Obviously you cannot go wrong with the Smiths, but this is not my favourite Smiths mix. Just something about the selection and the sequencing.
Now, of course, I have to post one of my own for you to criticise :)

I always had to take the Smiths in small doses. I love Marr's guitar playing but Morrissey is an acquired taste. With that said I do have a lot of Smiths in my collection and just recently grabbed the Best of Morrissey. I enjoyed your comments.
Like any mix for a band I love - you nailed many of my favorites and missed many of my favorites. I did a cover for Smiths mix, now I just have to make the mix.
