Comment:

Recently the Post Office over here has been a little erratic and consequently, a mix which I sent to my brother (Now With Vitamin F!) never actually reached him. This, then, is something which is going to go in the package for him along with another copy of that mix - it's a sort of "sorry your mix got lost in the post!" mix. (Any excuse.) When I was making it and thinking about the postal service generally, Bill Bryson's musings on the differences between the American and British versions of the service came to mind (in Notes From A Big Country), so I decided to pilfer a title from that - you can read the excerpt (it's worth it, really!) here. There is also a reason behind the ABBA track - I had a conversation with my brother along the lines of (me)"I don't know, I guess ABBA can be okay sometimes." (him) "C'mon, I mean, would you actually ever use them on a mix?!" (me) "I might, if it were the right song" (him)"Fine, do it then." (me)"Fine, I will!" Et voila. Also, there is an image for this, which I'll try to add when the site's back at 100% functionality again. Meanwhile, enjoy!

Well, I must admit I never thought I would see the day when the Legendary Pink Dots, ABBA, Ry Cooder, the Mamas & the Papas, Afrika Bambaataa, and the Plimsouls (et al) would end up on the same mix. Great stuff, Siobhan! What a groovy sister!

Damn fine mix. I haven't listened tothe Meices in quite some time and I also just pulled the record for a mix. Also digging the New Pornographers and Quasi. And I'm gonna have to give a thumbs up to Abba too. I still love those records, maybe now more than when they were new (and too hard to get a breather from). Those songs are solid and just plain fun. And not just because of the somewhat dated production (which is charming, but I think makes some folks reluctant to give them a chance today). I think almost every Abba single could be a hit today if they were rerecorded. Also thanks for mentioning Bill Bryson. I clicked on the link and saw the cover to "A Short History of Nearly Everything", which I skimmed in a bookstore last year but didn't buy it then. And then I've been tryimg to remember the author and/or title ever since. -Dale

Another fine mix. I've been listening to Ry Cooder quite a bit lately and I love the M & P's version of Dedicated.

This looks really spectacular, Siobhan! I especially like the stretch from the New Pornographers to the end. A great "mixed genre" mix, for sure.

The Plimsouls still hold that special place for me and to find their way in a mix w/ Afrika Bam? Nice! Then to finish with the M&P's cover of the Shirelles, hmmmm...

Abba are pretty weird, when I was young (in the seventies) they were hated by every serious musiclover in Sweden, too much money making, too shallow too little political, guess what nowadays they are like gods up here, the best thing since sliced bread or at least Beatles, personally I think they're really great sometimes (SOS, Knowing me knowing you, Gimme Gimme, Winner takes it all, Dancing Queen, ETC) but really lousy too (I do, I do I do, Thank you for the music, Fernando etc) maybe I should do a Abba mix BTW I saw them live in Hudiksvall back in 1974 right after the won the Eurovisionsong contest with that "Waterloo" song BTW nice mix

eee! For me! And I just sent you an e-mail asking you to do me another one. I am a cheeky bugger, I do know. Now, however, I must already say I do know the Kitchens and Pornographers tracks, and i do love them. Your Abba challenge has begun, however, and I am very excited for the arrival of this beast of a mix. I was chatting to someone at work, and apparently the level with which they harmonised was completely precise, and very complex. I don't actually really know if that's true or not (i believe, to quote homestar "that's bupkis!"), but it's another layer in the abba madness. and, did you know that their name backwards is the same forwards?! strange but true. Anyway, much thanks, much anticipation, much recquired from me, eh? i get on the job. the cd making job. and thanks once more for getting them morrisseeeeee tickets.

Just catchin' up cos I've been to Blighty for a week. Great mix Siobhan. Waterloo has me trying to summon up the image of my now wife, on her hen w/e. As she screamed the words to Waterloo as it blasted from a car stereo with her stood up through the sunroof; as her friends raced through a French village. Apparently the locals didn't know what to make of the sight. Was it the song (not the most subtle song to sing in France) or a pissed English woman drawing attention to herself that left them gawping?
