Comment:

I did this a while ago after a conversation in the pub with some friends about pop, where I tried to explain what indie pop is. Although it's one of my favourite genres, I didn't do very well, using lots of expressions like "it's kind of like" and "you know when a song sort of sounds like...", but anyway, I was inspired to do this afterwards in an attempt to catch the vibe of it. I should explain that the mix isn't all indie pop, and isn't really supposed to be exclusively that - it was more the overall atmosphere of the music I was going for, with lots of relatively simply structured, melodious and, often, rather cute or quirky tunes. Meanwhile, if anyone could put down a coherent definition of indie pop I would be very appreciative! :)

I hate labels so I can't help you with that but I love this mix!

I definietly prefer the non-indie pop selections, but this looks like a nice one, indeed. Can't go wrong with the Sparks, and Mercury Rev REALLY did a version of "Raindrops"? Jeez . . .

Lots of nice stuff on this mix... I never have a good definition for "indie pop" either... I guess it would be music that's too good for mainstream radio. :)

Yeah, lots of goodies here. And I can relate to your experience as well as a lot of my friends are lost when I try to explain to them some of the music I listen to. Its a good killer of trivial small talk though!

Siobhan this is tops. Frenchies homestead is currently shaking from foundatios to rafters with: Beulah, High Llamas, Mirah & The Bees. Don't look toward my shores for that definition, cos I haven't a clue, if you get a decent reply though I'd love to know what it is!

What Clif said. Very, very nice stuff. Definitely a "Siobhan" mix, in the best sort of way.

Very very nice. Who knows what indiepop is? I don't really like the term 'indie' at all... we know that music is music!

Looks like an excellent introduction to the vibe you're trying to define.

I like the quirky/melodious strain you've got here, -- but as for a coherent definition, I'd defer to DeKooning who said, (when the Abstract Expressionists were trying to decide on a label for their style), "It would be disastrous to name ourselves." (Actually it worked out very well as a marketing ploy for those guys, but of course DeKooning wasn't thinking about marketing . . .)

This looks stunningly poptastic. When we complete our trade, feel free to add this as one of its components. :-)

it's all startin to get a bit scary when you have'nt heard of half a dozen of the bands ! though i'd have loved to have been in the pub, to give the definition a go !!
