Comment:

A bit more of what I'd originally intended the previous mix to be-Morose Equinox; my Muse had other plans though and so it took a little while longer for this one to shake out into something I'll listen to again and again. And again. I believe the impetus for this one came via current infatuation with the back catalog(ue) of 10cc, a favorite when I was a teen' and I can't help but ask: "Is there any band working today who's songs show such clear signs of a group having a ton of fun like 10cc did?" Maybe Gaz and Supergrass...the Pillbugs and Squires of the Subterrain, too. But it seems like only a handfull..., to me.
This mix is dedicated to Mark Mikel of the Pillbugs, and Chris Earl of the Squires of the Subterrain. They hipped me to the tracks denoted with an * as previously unreleased material. Good friends those two. Also, thanks again to Joe Kane of the mighty Owsley Sunshine for the opener. (PS I am still rebuffed in my attempts to work in the Fourmyula's "Toffee Apple Sunday" in to a mix; I'd have thought this would be the one. The Muse was having none of it. Ah well, maybe Ion will at some future date.) Be yourself.

Looks like cool stuff. Very nice work. Anybody know what 10cc and the Lovin' Spoonful have in common?

Quite superb from start to finish, mr Valis. I love all the poppy stuff on here to from Chad and Jeremy to The Tremeloes. People used to laugh at me when I said I liked the Tremeloes, but I always thought they had a great sense of fun which shone throughout their music. In reply to Mixxer's query.......Sperm. Like Howlin' Wolf said (or somebody like him) "I love my baby 'bout a lovin' Spoonful" 10cc is the average size of a human ejaculation. All this filthy talk is makin' me horny, gotta go and have a cold shower.

This looks outstanding, amigo. I don't know much of this but what I know I love (Pillbugs, Squires, CM, 10cc etc). Dunno what's wrong with the Tremeloes. I prefer Martin Newell's original version of "Miss Van Houten" to the Captain's, tho.

WOW! This is a beautiful pop extravaganza. Much here that's new, but it's in such good company. This is the way to end/start the year. So, how do the Chad & Jeremy albums hold up these days?

You definitely know your pop, Valis. Also, I think your covers are as interesting as your mixes.

like it! not that morose to my mind. some nice humour and some great pop (meant in the best way). I used to love 10cc but they have fallen from my radar screen. I'll try and remedy that this evening.

Looks like I'm a bit late for this flight, but I'll be happy to go on standby. Great stuff all around -- Billy Nicholls, Sugarplastic, Chewy Marble, Chad & Jeremy (just got Of Cabbages and Kings) and of course the Squires. Got to investigate more 10CC stuff. BTW, I knew the answer to Mixxer's query, but Gerry came first.

Turned up late to the party as usual (cos the dean his daughter & me were havin' a ball & I couldn't get away!) Bon nouveaux annee Valis; Got me stumped here matey save for the obvious ones. Tremeloes have long been a fav. band of mine. Wishing I could say more but most of this is virgin territory to me.

Aside from the Beatles and (thanks to you) Protheroe tracks I don't know any of these... (Well, I do know Martin Newell's version of Miss Van Houten's Coffee Shop). Like French Connection, I wish I could say more...

Can't really speculate on so much I don't know about, except that I trust the pilot on this flitght and if this is an alternate-take on "morose equinox" it's probably another mindblower.

valis, if we can work this one into a trade & i could truly soak it up, then I bet I could make a more valid response . . .

valis, sometimes it takes me more than one listen to begin to absorb what you're doing with your assemblages, but I always know they're worth repeated listening, and, yes, now this one is starting to come together for me.
First three tracks gather altitude, getting up to about 8 miles high with a dayglow smile, & from there on it's stunt flying & soaring along with the Sunday Girl, Daytime Girl, & Cyclothematic Girl, until we come down comfortably parachuting with a strange umbrella to land in the soup.
Words of wisdom to end out with: yes, life IS a minestrone! Finally I realize it . . .
