Comment:
It's a "Trick Of The Ear"...The Dead Man once asked visitors to his website "What are your favorite cover versions of psychedelia?" (paraphrasing, gist intact).
Since I came across the question I've been thinking and assembling some of the versions which are my own answer. So many great tracks have been rescued from obscurity with the veritable onslaught of the many compilations available to the conniesseur and the newcomer aiding the cause of the originals alongside their peers. The upshot of this wave of nostalgia has been that bands flexing their neo-psych' brain have a wealth of access to said originals and have been honoring their forefathers by covering these great tracks.
For me the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows" has been a touchstone of everything I appreciate and enjoy in psychedelia. The Chameleons UK however give it the "oomph" that I sometimes wish the original had. They put the power ON! The next track, covered here by Primal Scream, has long been a favorite version since I first heard it more than a decade ago.(Tempus fugit, indeed.) Also, the Primals version takes the original and fully makes it their own, instead of a note-for-note recreation. We're better for it, too, imho. The Embrooks belong in the aformentioned set of "neo-psychsters" who pay homage on more than one occasion with great cover versions, the choice was tough. Gary Ramon's Sun Dial doing their version of the Open Mind's "Magic Potion" has been held in high esteem since their version first appeared. I'll not go through each track but want to touch upon a few of the remaining tracks-Plasticland openly admits the Pretty Things were their favorite band, so it's no coincidence they do a ripping version of the Pretty's "Alexander". The Golliwogs "Fight Fire" has been a personal fav' since I first heard it on the Dead Man's brilliant internet radio show so when sr71 offered me this cover I jumped.., big thanks. McFadden's Parachute is one of three Rochester bands appearing on this comp' and the newest, to me, in terms of familiarity with their music. They, too, have so many solid choices for obscure cover versions in their discography but this version of the Mystic Tide track leapt out at me after repeated listenings. (The Squire of the Subterrain hipped me to them and I'm eternally grateful.) Finally, the Church do a knock-out job on their version of "It's All Too Much", from their all-covers release: Box of Birds...again, a tough choice but I thought the symmetry of the begin/end justified the appearance.
This mix is dedicated to the site's birthday boy & resident Psych'-ic----Gerry McDonald, Happy Psychedelic Wishes!!!

Quite stunning, Valis. A truly exceptional piece of work. Can't wait to get a listen to this, and many thanks for the kind wishes! Viva le Valis!
Excellent idea. A disc of the originals would make a great companion. Do I detect a Meddle influence in the cover?
i can hear colors and taste music just looking at this set list. bloody brilliant. also glad to see you came around on bongwater. i was hoping i could win ya over to the bong side of the moon.
I'm with the birthday boy (happy, happy birthday Gerry!), this is "quite stunning." Love the cover, love the notes and love the mix. The Ride, Voivod (what a fuckin' monster that is...), Bongwater and Beatle cover bookends especially.
Looking quite stellar Mr. Hertel!

Uncovering the mysteries . . . this is making my ears light up & glow. I only know most of these from the originals, but they're originals I'd like to hear again from across the universe on a different wavelength.
It's all too much!
It's all too much!
It's a-happening, valis! Oh, and here's an alternate cover of The Porpoise Song by Oranger... http://www.oranger.net/sound/oranger-PorpoiseSong.mp3
Huzzah for another Valis mix! Looks wonderful - very clever and I like the liner notes a lot. And I'm definitely in agreement with p about the Primal Scream track - awesome.
Ooh this looks GOOD. Some personal faves (Wondermints, Bongwater) some that I'd love to hear (virtually everything else particularly Sun Dial & the Voivoids). Have a tipple of Dr Hoffman's finest on me sir!
Music to me ears indeed my good sir> 2, 5 & 17 are all that I know/have. Oh & this is Cliff via Gobi`s.
This is fantastic.
It's Gerry's big day? Wow! What a great mix and reason to celebrate! I know some of these covers and all the originals - so this totally kicks ass. How could it not - it's a Valis mix!
O Happy day for us-a Valis mix. Happy B-day Gerry!
this looks great and great notes.... Best wishes to our friend Gerry too!!!!!
Superb looking mix, Valis. Don't know too many of the versions here but you sure have lured me in with those notes. And a belated Happy Birthday to Gerry, too :)
This is certainly an earful! Great mix, Valis - happy b-day, Gerry.
Late to the party as usual (as all my fellow AOTMers have already emptied the keg. I'm gettin' nothing but foam here.) Yes, you've got some dandy covers gathered here. In most cases, I either know the original or the cover, but not both. Hope to get my ears on it sometime! Lots of great covers of Porpoise Song out there in addition to Bongwater & Oranger -- the Wondermints, the Church and Lollipop Train all have a good go at it. And happy birthday Gerry. Is that him passed out in the corner?
Trompe L'Oreille, bien sur! Et, trompe l'oeil aussi. Nice one, valis.
Oh man, is this cool! I don't know all of these, but the ones I do know are excellent. Great theme, great cover, great tracks.
Years ago I had pigeonholed my collection by concentrating almost entirely on covers...this mix makes me wonder why I got away from that. Thanks!
Nicely done! Would love to have this to replace my copy of "The Space Negros Do Generic Ethnic Muzak Versions of All Your Favorite Punk/Psychedelic Songs From the Sixties."
Whoa, I missed this the first time. Great mix.
Missed this... Looks lovely.
Nice mix, kudos on Chameleons and the Church!
