Dear John
Comment:
Not made for a friend named John. Thanks to Moe for "That Boy John."
Feedback:
Cute and well-done. You might want to consider using "Johnny Remember Me" (that Joe Meek-produced creeper from "If I find my keys, we can both drive outta here!"), should you ever choose to revise this. :-)
Very nice. The Beach Boys did a funny song about Johnny Carson aptly titled "Johnny Carson" on their much maligned Love You album from that great year for music 1977.
Just fabulous...u can come over anytime ;)
Terrific-love the Poe tune and the closer.
Nice idea. Big fan of the Ted Leo track.
Looking good! You're most welcome for "That Boy John." Love that Liz Phair track too. Forget "Good Vibrations" and "God Only Knows" - "Johnny Carson" was the Beach Boys' finest moment.
superb stuff, Jenny. All I know here I dig muchly.
Surabaya Johnny!!! I thought I was the only one on the planet that loves that song. Thanks for helping get rid of (some of )the despair and lonliness...
....letters never sent...
Johnny B.Goode brings back good memories(though the one I remember was sung by Johnny Rivers-probably a remake)and Poe is always a good choice.
Great stuff, Jen. One of my first mixes for this site was a Johnny cassette and it's interesting to note how little overlap there is. Surabaya Johnny also made it on to there (That makes 3 of us April!) but it was Lotte Lenya's rendition not Dagmar's. I'll second Rob's comments about Johnny Remember Me.
"Slop John B" is always considered filler but I think it's great. The rest of the mix is pretty cool too..
I LOVE "Sloop John B," and the fact that I was committed to including it is part of the reason "Johnny Carson" didn't make it on here. I did consider including Das Damen's cover (from the wonderful tribute album Smiles, Vibes & Harmony. I do have plenty more John songs, and I think it's neat that plushpig & I overlapped only one Chuck Berry song. Though "The Rebel Johnny Yuma" was one of the last songs I cuts.
Great idea, I love the mix. All though I prefer Liz Phair's Dance of Seven Veils that starts, "Jonny my love, Get out of the business..."
Johnny Bye Bye by Chuck Berry (and the updated "Elvis" version that Bruce Springsteen did), Bowie's "John I'm only Dancing," and "Oh, John" by Paula Cole are some other titles to consider for volume 2...with "Johnny Carson," of course. This looks like a load of fun!!!
