Heavy Metal
Comment:
This mix started over a few beers. That's right, an actual face-to-face meeting of mixers. Jenergy was giving a presentation in Washington, DC, and what better way to wind down afterward than to hoist a few with fellow music lovers? Jenergy, Lanhamyodel and Dead Man met an Biddy's Irish Pub in DuPont Circle, exchanged mix CDs and talked about this website that we devote so much of our time to. We discussed ideas for theme mixes and Jenergy came up with the idea of organizing a mix around the tuba, which is not a common instrument on AotM. In the next few days each of us (along with GambleOn) gathered together a few tracks and sent them to Jenergy. The tuba is the largest instrument in the brass family. Tubas are made in a variety of pitches and if straightened out, range in length from 12 to 18 feet. Concert tubas are designed to sit in the player's lap, and while tubas can be adapted for marching, for that purpose most opt for the Sousaphone, which is designed to wrap around the player's body. In addition to symphony orchestras and marching bands, tubas have long been used in jazz, but as the tracks in this mix demonstrate, the tuba is a versatile instrument that is at home in a variety of genres. What's striking is the range of styles represented in this mix. Contrary to notion that the only function of a tuba is to provide an "oompah" sound, the tuba is an expressive instrument.
Jenergy selected and sequenced the tracks, Lanhamyodel designed the cover, and Dead Man wrote the notes. Unfortunately, the length of time it has taken to finish this mix meant that we missed International Tuba Day, which is celebrated annually on the first Friday in May.

Feedback:
Wow. Impressive to say the least. Liking the tracks I'm familiar with especially that Hawk and a Hacksaw number.
Tu-bad! I missed celebrating International Tuba Day, too, this year! This mix will surely help bouy my spirits, tho. There's always next year, I guess.
Very impressive guys. I love how it came about. I've often wondered about meeting other AotM'ers in the physical world. Ive got a pre conceived idea in my head of how everybody on here looks, I'd love to know how wrong/right I am. Anyhoo. Love the Hacksaw - Waits pairing and everything else that I recognize. Well done to one and all.
Tuba much!
Tuba, quiero bailar la salsa.Love this mix you guys..
You're all mad, I tell you... I can't wait to hear this.
That's freakin' odd. I was JUST in that very same area during the 4th. I was four blocks up the way at a hotel in Connecticut. Saw that Pub each time we went to and from the sites downtown.I know you're not one to toot your own horn, but this is fantastic! Fun! And, soon to be all mine!
No Drums & Tuba? This is really rather fun. A good week on the site generally, methinks
And...all this and no Drums and Tuba! Impressive.
Four blocks up the way at a hotel on Connecticut? That's almost exactly where I used to live. Now I'm getting sad. Was it the Courtyard by Marriot, by chance? Or the Hilton. Fabulous mix by the way. I'm quite fond of the Rice University Marching Owl band and you've inspired me to look for my "High Time" lp which I haven't seen for years.
Looks like a fun one. Great mix.
Tuba-ular! Impressive collabortive effort guys. I can't even think of one song that utilizes a tuba and you came up with 24. Great cover Lanhamyodel, though some may think it blows. So did anyone take any photos of this historical face-to-face meeting?
This is why I keep coming back to this site. You're all fucking nuts and you love your tunes, by Jiminy!
I was never into heavy metal until now....
Way fun. I love these kind of theme mixes - lots of stuff you wouldn't expect to find (I would never have remembered Martha My Dear). And you hit one of the all-time Tuba greats, Billy and the Boingers. The only ommision I can see is something from the Ridiculous Trio Plays the Stooges album.
Heavy Duty! Absolutely freakin' brilliant! Tom Waits, Supertramp and Mitch Miller on the same mix!!!
love to hear it
This is the best excuse for that ending in Sister Anne yet!! Excellent collaboration.
This is great shit, Tom Waits & Billy & The Boingers! I own that flexi myself and haven't thought about it in years. Personally I played sax in band but this gives me a new respect for the tuba. Great Mix all the way around.
Super-amazing stuff. Wow! These kind of theme mixes always impress the hell out of me.
superb idea, brilliantly executed. Now, how about a mix featuring kazoo?
The Sousaphone players of the world salute you!
All that's missing is a cut from The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

. . . . I've been out of town so missed this . . . .looks like great fun, which I had been in time for the link . . . .amazingly, I had forgotten that Supertramp even existed . . .
of course, my drunk fingers meant to say, 'wish I had been in time for the link' . . . .
